A totem pole carved by well-known Gitkxaala artist, James Lewis, was successfully transferred from a Prince Rupert Port Authority warehouse, where it has been stored for years, to the Gitkxaala Continuous Learning Centre in the Chatham Building. James Lewis will now be able to fulfill his long-standing desire to finish this pole. The Museum of Northern BC was happy to facilitate the transfer of the pole, but it was the Maintenance Department and the Department of Indigenous Relations at the Prince Rupert Port Authority that made it happen, from coordination to transportation and delivery.
Many thanks also to Corcoat’s three crew members, the three MNBC staff and to Dustin Johnson, Gitkxaala Language and Culture Manager, who all helped loading and unloading the pole. Everyone was amazing. And thank you very much to Helen Gladstone and her staff at the Gitkxaala Continuous Learning Centre for making the space available and preparing it for the arrival of the pole.
