Veterans Art Gallery is blessed to work with so many artists. We are blessed with the many connections formed within the wider community where we live. Two of these came together at our Summertime Boots to Brushes event in mid-August. One of our artists, David Lewis (retired Royal Canadian Navy), had painted an acrylic of 'Western Fair at Night' which was hanging in the gallery. Jennifer Von Ruczicki, Director of Community Development at Western Fair (and an officer in the Cadet Instructors Cadre with the CAF), attended the event. The Western Fair purchased David's art piece, and he delivered it this morning.
We are proud to interact with the Western Fair and respect their proud history with the Canadian Forces. Here's just a brief recap:

During times of conflict, the Western Fair grounds in London, Ontario, were completely transformed to support Canada's military efforts.

World War I (1914–1918)

Troop mobilization: Local military units used the Western Fair grounds as an active training and mobilization camp.

The 1st Hussars: The historic 1st Hussars cavalry regiment utilized the fairgrounds for training exercises before deploying overseas to Europe in 1915.

World War II (1939–1947)

Military occupation: The annual exhibition was completely suspended for eight years when the Canadian Department of National Defence took over the property.

Camp transformation: Exhibition buildings were repurposed, and parts of the grounds were converted into active military training facilities and barracks.

Post-war return: The Western Fair Association did not regain control of the property until 1947, spending a year restoring the heavily utilized grounds before the fair finally returned in 1948...

James is a director with the Veterans Art Gallery and a passionate advocate for PTSD recovery and sobriety. Having served as a police officer, firefighter, and paramedic, James understands the weight that first responders and veterans can carry long after the uniform comes off.

Today, he uses art and creativity as powerful tools for healing, expression, and connection—not only in his own journey, but in helping others find a way forward.

This is a conversation about service, recovery, creativity, and turning what we've lived through into something that can help someone else.

Welcome to True Colors, James Agesen.

With our Summertime Boots to Brushes just around the corner, we look back at our Wintertime event with warm memories. So many great people attending that it had more of a feeling of a 'kitchen party' than a gallery event. Follow us on Facebook, give this video a 'like'.... please. :)
