🎃On October 24th the Museum is hosting its annual Boo-seum Halloween event! It is a great opportunity to get our earlier for some trick or treating and activities 🎃

Admission is pay what you can and we hope to see costumes as well!

The Scugog Shores Museum Village is situated on beautiful Scugog Island. Featuring 11 buildings, the Museum hosts programs and events year round. Open for general admission from May to the end of August.

A wide shot photo looks over houses and over Lake Scugog in the 1907. Some similarities that we can see, are the brick buildings lining Queen Street and Currie's Grain Elevator on the shores of Lake Scugog. One very noticeable difference is that there is a large marshy area that has settled further up the shore line than what we see today.

Glass plate negatives were invented in the 1850s and they were only done by specialists as the process was very intricate and it was an expensive process. Having a photo taken was uncommon for most people during this time, and sometimes someone would only have their photo taken once in their entire lives. With how rare it was to have photos taken, it was very important to choose what the photo would be of. We typically see family photos or photos to mark events like weddings, or of someone before a long journey.

🪡This portable sewing kit was both practice and fashionable. Made with beautiful red velvet, it looked more like a purse. Kits like this were used to carry the essential tools like needles, threads, thread wax, and thimbles when ladies went to Quilting Bees.

Quilting Bees were very social and it was important to look presentable. Once at the Bee, the women worked together to make a single quilt made of shared fabric scraps and as they worked, they would share stories and enjoy good company.

On July 3rd 1884, the second fire in two years tore through downtown Port Perry.

There was a terrible heat wave the week prior and everything had dried up. Sparks from a blacksmith forge ignite the shop, and the neighboring stables of the Mansion House Hotel. This fire moved quickly and destroyed most of the downtown strip. This fire greatly impacted the economic situation in Port Perry as many stores were destroyed and sales had to stop during the rebuilding process.

It took some time to rebuilt the downtown area, and after the two fires, everything was being rebuilt with brick instead of wood. These classic red brick buildings are now a significant part of the charm of downtown Port Perry.

This is a World War I helmet that was worn by Roy Herbert Scott who was part of the 58th Battalion Infantry. Soldiers within this Battalion were recruited from Central Ontario and were moved to Great Britain in 1915 to assist in war efforts.
