The end of the summer season is coming up and there are changes in the standard hours of operations. The Museum will be closed September the 2nd and 3rd, but we will be open September 4th to 6th for a fun final weekend at Scugog Shores Museum! The earliest known hand planes date back to the Roman era and were commonly used tools used for craftsmen for centuries. Woodworking Planes typically feature a wooden body with a iron plating that was angled and has a handgrip.Woodworking Planes whould help smooth and shape peices of wood for future inovations. In the 1800's planes were beginning to be made out of iron which allowed for blade adjustments. Woodworking Planes continue to be a vital tool in the craft of woodworking today.

Music Boxes in the Victorian Era (1837-1901) were devices used to play music and also symbols of luxury. Music Boxes often featured multiple melodies and dancing figurines or tiny orchestras. During the Victorian Era,Music Boxes became very popular to have as a treasured household item or givin to as a gift.

It is the fourth week exploring the history of Lake Scugog! Today we will be looking at this photo of the wharf in Port Perry! The wharf, known originally as Sexton’s Wharf, became vital for the town in the 1850s. Steamboats filled the water to transport goods like lumber and grains to Port Perry from other towns, villages, and settlements among the Trent Severn.
With the construction of Port Perry’s train station located nearby in what is now Palmer Park, allowed for those goods to be easily transported throughout Ontario.
Today the wharf remains a popular spot for fishing as well as appreciating the views of the lake!

Stained Glass has evolved from ancient decorative glass to art form in cathedrals, blending colours, light and craftmenship. This stained glass piece was commissioned by the children of Mr and Mrs Crozier, and was an original piece in the Scugog Island United Church.

Scugog Island United Church closed in June 2025. Afterwards, the window was removed and was mounted in the Head Memorial Church right here at Scugog Shores!

The Scugog Shores Museum Village is situated on beautiful Scugog Island. Featuring 11 buildings, the Museum hosts programs and events year round. Open for general admission from May to the end of August.

The man in this photo has an important job, he’s hunting out on Lake Scugog. Lake Scugog provides a wide array of game to hunt! Unless you were wealthy, hunting was not a hobby, rather it was a necessity to survive. It was quite lucky to be a hunter in and around Lake Scugog. For fishermen the lake can provide Large and Small Mouth Bass, Perch, and Black Crappie just to name a few. The shores of the lake are also home to deer, pheasants, wild turkey, and much more!

Manners manners manners, a very important reminders for those who were going to be attending a dinner party in the Victorian Era. If invited to a dinner it was expected of you to show, if you could not, you must give ample notice. Dinners had a routine to them. The typical order in which food was served was the soup, followed by a fish dish, then roasted or boiled meats. The fourth course, desert, would typically contain baked goods with fresh fruits. The way you arranged your dining room was important as well. Elaborate wall papers and well-designed dishes were what was expected in the Victorian Era. On the table it would not be odd to see up to eight forks for a single person, these would range from a fork specifically for forks as well as an ice cream fork!
