Hundreds of photographs, archival and genealogical records and other artifacts relating to the construction and impact of the Canso Causeway, the industries and lifestyle of the area which was settled in 1788 tell our story. We cover down route 19 through Troy, Creignish, Craigmore to the bridge in Long Point, out Creignish Rear and South Rhodena, back in to Queensville and Lexington, across to Ma

ckdale, Askilton, Sugar Camp, Barberton, Crandall Road, MacIntyre's Lake, Sunnyside and Bear Head, Point Tupper, Mulgrave and back across to Port Hawkesbury and Port Hastings. These areas have been covered since the beginning of our story because of the train and car ferries initially in history and then after the completion of the Causeway, the industries that established down in the Point Tupper, Sunnyside areas and the critical impact which it all made on the town of Mulgrave.

Do you ever feel like giving up? Well that is how I felt at the museum on Saturday. Someone actually cut all the copper pipe off of our heat/air conditioning unit. We are a non-profit society that employs 8-10 employees every season and we work hard to fundraise just to keep the heat and lights on. The unit is used for heat and humidity control to protect our artifacts and our archives. If someone in need came to me asking for the maybe $30 they will get from selling the copper, I would have gladly offered them the money out of my own pocket. Now we will have to fundraise probably thousands of $$$$$ to repair the damage. We have some pretty dirty, low life people in our community, but thank goodness for the lovely cameras that capture so much behind us from the hotel.
Police have been notified but please feel free to reach out with any extra info. Tomorrow I will reach out to get quotes on the repairs...

πŸ“Έ Spring 1955 β€” the almost finished Canso Causeway captured from the Auld’s Cove side on Cape Porcupine.

This photo shows a very different Causeway than we know today. The highway was still unpaved. The Canso Causeway forever changed travel, trade, tourism, and daily life for communities on both sides of the Strait. πŸš‚πŸ“·
