FLASHBACK! The Western edition of the SCI_ART Art, Science and Technology Symposium took place in Vancouver and Kelowna a few weeks ago, organized by the Critical Futures Studio/Lab at the University of British Columbia, with the generous support of the European Union in Canada and many other partners. We’re proud to see this initiative continue to grow into an event of national significance. What a surprise to see long-time SAW collaborator and friend Lesley Marshall light up the massive dome in Vancouver and Ottawa-based Charlotte Qamaniq perform live at the Vancouver International Film Festival!

RETOUR EN IMAGES ! L’édition de l’Ouest du symposium SCI_ART sur l’art, la science et la technologie s’est déroulée à Vancouver et à Kelowna il y a quelques semaines. Organisé par le Critical Futures Studio/Lab de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, l’événement a bénéficié du généreux soutien de l’Union européenne au Canada et de nombreux autres partenaires. Nous sommes fiers de voir cette initiative prendre de l’ampleur et s’imposer comme un événement d’envergure nationale. Quelle belle surprise de voir notre amie et fidèle collaboratrice de longue date, Lesley Marshall, illuminer l’immense dôme de Vancouver ainsi que de voir Charlotte Qamaniq d'Ottawa au Vancouver International Film Festival!

Biennale d'art performatif de Rouyn-Noranda - samedi 17 octobre 19h00 à l'Écart

High Gear interroge le cycle incessant de la production, de la consommation et de la réincarnation. S’inspirant de la structure narrative du yonkoma manga, souvent utilisée dans la presse politique, cette performance traverse quatre thèmes fondamentaux: 1起) naître, 2承) manger, 3轉) travailler et 4結) mourir, dans un circuit fermé où les représentations sont continuellement absorbées, (dé)construites et (re)formées. Plutôt que de reproduire ces schémas, Kidows Kim cherche à en subvertir les mécanismes, briser leur réitération et s’affranchir de leur emprise. Il y explore une collection corporelle de figures tirées de mémoires intimes parasitées, enchevêtrées dans une imagerie de mangas.

De cet agglomérat de bruits et de regards émerge un corps fantomatique et fragmenté qui tente de se frayer un passage. High Gear devient un espace où le corps s’expose et se décompose dans la quête d’un extérieur insaisissable.

High Gear is a solo piece that questions the relentless cycle of production, consumption, and reincarnation. Drawing inspiration from the structure of yonkoma manga, a type of four-panel comic often used in political journalism, this solo delves into four fundamental themes: 1起) birth, 2承) eating, 3轉) working, and 4結) death. These stages unfold within a closed circuit where representations are continuously absorbed, (de)constructed, and (re)formed. Rather than reproducing these patterns, a figure seeks to subvert its mechanisms, disrupt its repetition, and break free from its hold. It explores a corporeal collection of figures drawn from parasitized intimate memories, intertwined with imagery from alternative manga. In the interstices of this amalgamation of noise and gazes, a fragmented, ghostly body struggles to find its way. High Gear thus becomes an excluded space, where the body exposes and decomposes itself in pursuit of an elusive exterior.

For many decades, Amnesty International Canada has defended countless activists, including artists who have stood up to their governments or state forces. Many of these artists are featured in our exhibition Body Politics: Art, Protest and the State. Ai Weiwei, P***y Riot, and recently released from prison Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara are among the artists whose cases have been supported and followed by Amnesty International.

SAW is proud to partner with this exceptional human rights organization, with ongoing programming and actions taking place throughout the exhibition.

Depuis plusieurs décennies, Amnistie internationale Canada Francophone défend d’innombrables militant·es, notamment des artistes qui se sont opposé·es à leurs gouvernements ou aux forces de l’État. Plusieurs de ces artistes sont présent·es dans notre exposition Corps politiques : Art et protestation face à l'État. Ai Weiwei, P***y Riot et l’artiste cubain Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, récemment libéré, comptent parmi les artistes dont les situations ont été soutenues et suivies par Amnesty International.

Toutes nos félicitations à Marie-Jeanne Musiol pour avoir remporté un Prix du Gouverneur général en arts visuels et en arts médiatiques ! Non seulement Marie-Jeanne est-elle une figure incontournable du monde de la photographie, elle est également une grande défenseure du milieu culturel gatinois. Son engagement se reflète notamment dans le développement du pôle culturel de La Filature, qui abrite l’un des plus beaux centres d’artistes au monde, AXENÉO7. On voit ici une œuvre présentée dans le cadre de son exposition HUMAIN / NATURE à SAW en 2023, présentée dans le cadre du symposium SCI_ART, où Marie-Jeanne a également prononcé le discours d’ouverture.

Congratulations to Marie-Jeanne Musiol on receiving a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Not only has she been a leading force in the world of photography, she has also been a passionate advocate for Gatineau’s cultural community, a commitment reflected in the cultural hub of La Filature, home to one of the most remarkable artist-run centres in the world, AXENÉO7. Seen here is an image of her work from the exhibition HUMAN / NATURE at SAW in 2023, presented as part of the SCI_ART symposium, where she also delivered the opening keynote address.

Only a few weeks left to experience the hit summer exhibition Qillaniq at the National Gallery of Canada. We're proud to have played a small part through the SAW Nordic Lab's residency with Anchorage-based artist Drew Michael. Don't miss this incredibly well-designed and thoughtful exhibition, the most ambitious gathering of Northern Indigenous artists ever!

Curated by an all-Indigenous team, including SAW Board Chair, Jocelyn Piirainen and former SAW Nordic Lab Director, Taqralik Partridge

Our love affair with the Riverbed Reading Series continues at the Ottawa Vinyl and Book Fair with Conyer Clayton: Author in Conversation with Ellen Chang-Richardson this coming Sunday at 4PM.

Conyer Clayton is a q***r writer and editor from Louisville, a dual US-Canadian citizen living between Ottawa and Kentucky. They are the author of But the sun, and the ships, and the fish, and the waves (Winner of the Archibald Lampman Award), We Shed Our Skin Like Dynamite (Winner of the Ottawa Book Award), and many chapbooks. Conyer’s novel-in-progress has been supported by a MacDowell Fellowship, a McCormack Writing Centre Scholarship, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and The City of Ottawa. the lake-shaped excuse, their third book, is forthcoming in October 2026 with Buckrider Books, Wolsak and Wynn.

Notre histoire d’amour avec la série de lecture Riverbed Reading Series se poursuit à la Foire du vinyle et du livre d’Ottawa avec Conyer Clayton : entretien avec Ellen Chang-Richardson ce dimanche à 16 h.

Conyer Clayton est auteur·ice et éditeur·ice q***r, originaire de Louisville. De double citoyenneté américaine et canadienne, iel partage son temps entre Ottawa et le Kentucky. Check out the first music video ever shot in Canada! 🇨🇦

The Ballad of Crowfoot was released in 1968 and directed by Willie Dunn, a Mi’kmaq/Scottish folk singer, filmmaker and activist. You can view the first Indigenous-directed film to be made at the National Film Board of Canada on loop from 11am - 5pm at the DARC Microcinema on August 23 as part of the Vinyl & Book Fair presented by SAW x Collective Arts Brewing. 📚

The Ottawa Vinyl and Book Fair’s artist spotlight on Willie Dunn is presented by SAW in partnership with Digital Arts Resource Centre and the National Film Board of Canada. 100% of proceeds will be donated to Book Clubs for Inmates. Visit the link in below for details and tickets. 🎟️
