The current home that sits on Old Brewery Bay is not the first house the Leacock family built on the property. When Leacock purchased the land in 1908, they built a small cookhouse but ultimately decided to build a more permanent home where the family could live more comfortably. The house that we all know today was built in 1928!

Yousuf Karsh📸

Does this name sound familiar? Yousuf Karsh was a famous photographer who took many portraits that you might recognize. Karsh came to Canada from Armenia at 17 and fell deeply in love with photography after working for his Uncle Nakash, who owned his own photography studio. From there, he went on to become a very famous portraitist, photographing Winston Churchill, the Royal Family, Kermit the Frog, and our very own Stephen Leacock in 1941!

Come learn more about the time Yousuf Karsh came to Old Brewery Bay on "The Whole Story: House and Boathouse Guided Tour" Wednesday through Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Next is Erin's favourite room, she has been with us about a month now 🎶🎹

"My favourite room at the moment is the living room in the west wing. This is the home of our 1867 Steinway grand piano and our Victor Victrola record player, the latter of which is original to the house. The grand piano, while delicate, still works: a testament to the timeless power of song. I grew up in a home filled with music, so I can imagine the joy this room inspired when the Leacock family lived here. The living room also has amazing views of the front lawn and lake, along with the crabapple tree that blooms each spring."

Are you CAPtivated 🎩

Meaghan Armstrong, owner of Le Petit Chapeau, will be offering a talk at the Leacock Museum on the topic of 1940s fashion. Important collective creativity and how it can oppose oppression during transformative decades will be explored using her personal collection of hats and clothing. Guests will learn about the changing designs of women’s hats, the creative influences behind them, and how they reflected the broader shifts happening during a decade of social change.

Tickets are only $10 + HST and can be purchased at LeacockMuseum.ca!

Early bathtubs were made out of copper, tin or cast iron. Therefore, in the 1880s when bathtubs were lined with porcelain, like the one in this room, they became very popular. The clawfoot tub became the height of luxury in the late 19th century. Since it had become more common to have a bathtub with two tall sides, rather than the earlier bathtubs that mimicked the look of a chair or bucket, the shower head also became popular and was added to create showers as we know them today.

This chair was used as inspiration for the “Leacock Chairs” art installation in the Summer of 2012, where local artists decorated chairs in the same style. This installation was put together by Streets Alive!, which does a new art installation in downtown Orillia every summer.

If you're wandering around the Leacock Property and or around the city of Orillia, you might run into a few!
