Join us for the opening of The Life and Times of G and Fine Line: Check Check, Ian Johnston's exhibition.
This exhibition brings together two immersive four channel video installations, Fine Line: Check Check (2019) and The Life and Times of G (2024), tracing a shift in Ian Johnston’s practice from the material culture of consumption toward the psychological and social conditions that sustain it.
Both works place the viewer within fragmented sequences of images and sound that unfold across the screens, subtly directing the attention and movement of the audience. Fine Line: Check Check explores doubt within a mass culture increasingly marked by distrust, anticipation and compulsive patterns of behaviour. The Life and Times of G extends this investigation through G, a character whose movements between holistic and prescriptive technologies reflect competing ways of thinking and being in the world. G’s clothing, constructed from the debris of consumption, progressively accumulates as the work moves between natural and industrial landscapes and the central character weaves their way through life.
In both works, Johnston uses dancers, shifting images and spatialized sound to make the viewer’s own movement part of the work. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, the installations create situations in which viewers must navigate fragments, repetitions and uncertainty, asking how conscious our movements and choices are within the systems that surround us.
