The Centre will open in regular weekend hours on Saturday and Sunday but it will remain CLOSED on Monday Thanksgiving day.

It is that time of the year, changing to fall/winter hours.
Starting today we close the museum at 5:00 pm instead of 6:00 pm. Opening hours remian the same, at noon on weekends and Stats, and at 10:00 am on weekdays.

It took a while, but finally we have a winner of the contest for our Styxosaurus nickname.
This contest has had an overwhelming response from visitors.
We have collected the incredibly amount of 846 entries in barely 5 weeks.
Those 846 participants have proposed a total of 623 different names.
The most voted names were Styx, Sticky, Bob and Charon.
We have chosen Charon as the name with better response and the most appropriate considering the Greek mythology behind the name of the species.

Paleontologist Samuel Paul Welles officially named the genus Styxosaurus in 1943. He chose the name as a clever reference to the fossil's discovery site: the type specimen was found near a stream in Logan County, Kansas, called Hell Creek. Because Hell (the underworld) connects to the River Styx in mythology, Welles used Styxosaurus to nod to the Kansas stream where the bones were dug up.
In Greek mythology, Charon was the ferryman of the underworld who ferried the souls of the dead across the rivers of Styx and Acheron which separated the world of the living from the world of the dead. In order to board the ferryman's boat a dead soul must pay Charon with a gold coin in order to go on board, otherwise, the soul has to wander the docks as a beggar and pray for anyone to give him/her a spare coin. Those who are dying place a gold coin under their tongue or over their eyes so that their souls would have a coin in order to pay the ferryman.

Between all the entries with the name Charon, we randomly picked up one of them, so the winner is James Nachareun, from Lorette West MB.
James was a first-time visitor to the Museum and he found out about the Museum through one of the Corn&Apple Festival promotions.
We immensely appreciate all the visitors helping us to find this nickname!!

We will proceed with installing soon a sign with the name Charon.

Giant squid-like creatures roamed the Western Interior Seaway near what Morden is today.
How this octobrachian was killed 80.2 million years ago by a large predator is what our Associate Researcher Dr. Melina Jobbins et al. is now explaining in the Cretaceous Research journal, just published.
This specimen (Q80.05.14) was collected in spring 1980 by Elizabeth Nicholls, Henry Isaak, and Don Bell at Robertson Pit, and it is the smallest of the six large octobrachian of the genus Enchoteuthis in our collections, with an estimated total body lenght of 60 cm.
