Dans l’exposition 𝘝𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘻 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘳. 𝘔𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 présentée par PHI, l’œuvre 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘮𝘦 (2022) de 𝗣𝗮𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝘃𝗶 montre la Statue de la Liberté portant un masque en forme d’émoticône représentant Mahnaz Akbari, une femme afghane ayant servi dans l’armée nationale avant d’être contrainte de quitter son pays en 2021.

En multipliant les visages de ce symbole universel, l’artiste déplace le sens de la liberté et met en lumière les enjeux de visibilité et d’agentivité au sein de systèmes façonnés par la bureaucratie, la réglementation et l’accès inégal aux droits. L’œuvre interroge ainsi ce que la liberté représente réellement.

In the exhibition 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵. 𝘓𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 presented by PHI, the artwork 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘮𝘦 (2022) by 𝗣𝗮𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝘃𝗶 shows the Statue of Liberty wearing a mask in the form of an emoticon representing Mahnaz Akbari, an Afghan woman who served in the national army before being forced to leave her country in 2021.

By multiplying the faces of this universal symbol, the artist shifts the meaning of freedom and highlights issues of visibility and agency within systems shaped by bureaucracy, regulation, and unequal access to rights. The work thus questions what freedom truly represents.

Dans le cadre de la résidence PHI Montréal, le collectif 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝘁, composé de 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 et 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝘀𝗼𝗻, a développé 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘥’𝘶𝘯 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦́, un projet qui explore les liens entre mémoire, écologie et imagination collective.

As part of the PHI Montréal residency, the collective 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝘁, composed of 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 and 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝘀𝗼𝗻, developed 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, a research-creation project that explores the intersections of memory, ecology, and collective imagination.

Through a series of creative workshops held with community members, the artists invite participants to rethink their relationship with the living world and to imagine futures in which humans and animals might once again coexist. 🌿

L’histoire commence lorsque Tonio, le fils du roi des ours, est enlevé par des chasseurs dans les montagnes de Sicile. Pour sauver son peuple menacé par la famine, le roi décide de partir à la recherche de son fils et d’envahir la plaine des hommes. Aidé par son armée et un magicien, il parvient à retrouver Tonio et réalise rapidement que les ours ne sont pas faits pour vivre parmi les humains.

L'exposition 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘴 réunit cinq installations de grande envergure de l’artiste 𝗝𝗮𝗸𝗼𝗯 𝗞𝘂𝗱𝘀𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻, issues de plus d’une décennie de recherche environnementale, d’expérimentation technologique et d’exploration artistique. 🌋

Dans cette conversation avec le commissaire de PHI Daniel Fiset, Jakob revient sur le travail de terrain qui nourrit sa pratique – de la documentation de volcans sous-marins à ses collaborations avec des scientifiques étudiant des espèces disparues – et explique comment il transforme ces expériences en environnements immersifs à l’aide de technologies issues du jeu vidéo.

In this conversation with PHI curator Daniel Fiset, Jakob reflects on the fieldwork that informs his practice—from documenting underwater volcanoes to collaborating with scientists studying extinct species—and explains how he transforms these experiences into immersive environments using video game technology.

Comment occupons-nous les lieux, comment est-ce qu’on se les approprie, comment se transforment-ils et nous transforment-ils? Dans le cadre de la résidence PHI Montréal, l’artiste photographe 𝗘𝘃𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀 a développé une recherche autour du Havre de Montréal. 🌱

À travers les rencontres et l’observation du territoire, elle interroge notre manière d’habiter cet espace. En explorant les rives, les lieux publics et les zones moins accessibles du secteur, elle révèle des espaces et des récits souvent méconnus, ainsi que des réalités contrastées entre patrimoine, développement immobilier et vie quotidienne.

How do we occupy spaces, how do we make them our own, and how do they evolve and transform us? As part of the PHI Montréal residency, artist-photographer 𝗘𝘃𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀 has developed a research focused on the Montréal Harbour. 🌱

Through encounters and observation of the area, she examines how we inhabit this space. By exploring the waterfront, public spaces, and the less accessible areas of the neighbourhood, she reveals the often-overlooked spaces and stories, as well as the contrasting realities of heritage, real estate development, and daily life.

🗣️ Découvrez la cohorte 2026 de Voix i̵n̵Visibles!

Cette année, huit artistes issu·e·s de disciplines variées se réunissent pour prendre part à cette résidence qui célèbre la richesse des perspectives et des récits de la diaspora noire.

À travers leurs pratiques respectives – arts visuels, performance, cinéma, littérature, musique et création interdisciplinaire – les participant·e·s explorent de nouvelles façons de raconter, de transmettre et d’imaginer. Pendant trois jours, la cohorte prendra part à un programme intensif de mentorat, d’échanges et de développement professionnel chez PHI afin de soutenir l’évolution de leurs démarches artistiques et de leurs projets.

🗣️ Meet the 2026 cohort of i̵n̵Visible Voices!

This year, eight artists from diverse disciplines come together for a residency that celebrates the richness of perspectives and stories from across the Black diaspora.

Through visual arts, performance, film, literature, music, and interdisciplinary practices, participants explore new ways of telling stories, sharing knowledge, and imagining futures. Over the course of a three-day intensive program at PHI, the cohort will take part in mentorship, dialogue, and professional development opportunities designed to support the growth of their artistic practices and projects.
