Did You Know?

Mola Mola, also known as the Ocean Sunfish, are often mistaken for sharks! In reality, they are harmless, slow-moving bony fish with no teeth.

These unique creatures can be found in oceans around the world, including the waters off Nova Scotia. Despite their large size and distinctive appearance, there is still much to learn about them, and researchers continue to study their behaviour.

PFD's are required for children under the age of 13.

Summer Hours at the Salt Store Gift Shop!

The Salt Store Gift Shop will be open daily from 9:30am to 7:00pm until the end of August! That’s two extra hours each day to browse, shop, and enjoy all we have to offer!

*Please note: these extended hours apply to the gift shop only. Museum hours remain 9:30am to 5:00pm.

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic brings to life the rich culture and heritage of the Fishery located in the iconic brightly painted red buildings that were once the former fish processing plant in the town of Lunenburg. The town was known as the fishing capital of Canada for many generations.
So, the museum has over 10 galleries that really highlight the significance of the fisheries. So, you have galleries that were really showcase the success of the fishery and how that hinges on ocean preservation, which leads us into the first fisheries gallery that connects to the Mi’kmaq teachings and how their fishery is rooted in methods of sustainability.
We also have a large display of the vast and varied many different ways, of the methods of the fishery. We have spectacular models that really depict that way of life of the days of the wooden ships and iron men. The gallery that reveals the legend of Bluenose.
But what we really pride ourselves on here at the museum, is that we pay honour and tribute to our fishers by revealing the truths of their experiences and how that shapes our community's identities.
You can stroll along the beautiful waterfront, dine at the Old Fish Factory Restaurant, even do a little shopping at the Salt Store Gift Shop.
