SURPRISE! Due to the incredible season we’ve had, we’ve decided to extend our closing day to Saturday, October 31!

It looks like we may have quite a bit of rain coming our way! Weather folklore has a long history in Lunenburg County, with sayings that claim to predict when rain is on the horizon.

Here are a few sayings from the Lunenburg County Folklore and Oral History Project by Laurie Lacey. Do you believe any of these? Or do you have your own weather sayings that you swear by?

“Pink sky at night, sailor’s delight. Pink sky in the morning, sailor’s take warning.”

“Leaves on the trees will turn up when rain is on hand.”

“If the pots (on the stove) boil dry, (it is a) sign of rain”

“If a cat or dog chews grass, it is a sign of rain.”

“The house flies bite when there’s a rain on hand.”

“A circle around the moon means a storm. If there’s no stars within the circle, it means a storm within a day.”
