🇨🇦🎖️ On September 14, 1993, hundreds of Canadian soldiers moved into Croatia’s Medak Pocket as United Nations peacekeepers.

They expected to help establish a neutral zone.

Instead, Canadian troops came under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire.

Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, returned fire and held their positions.

Four Canadians were injured during the fighting.

National Defence describes Medak Pocket as an action often considered among the toughest faced by Canadian troops between the Korean War and Afghanistan.

The mission later became an important reminder that Canadian peacekeeping could involve very real combat.

Thirty-three years ago today, that reality became unmistakable.

On this day in 1945, the Second World War came to an end with the announcement of Victory over Japan (V-J Day). Today, we pause to Remember the extraordinary sacrifices of Canada’s Armed Forces. Their legacy will never be forgotten.

On this day 81 years ago Victory in Japan day was commemorated, effectively ending the Second World War.

Europe had celebrated months earlier, while British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces in the Far East continued the fight, suffering terrible losses. After almost six years of the most destructive war in history, peace could at last be celebrated, and preparations made to return home, with Allied prisoners of war liberated and repatriated after their appalling experiences.

Join us in remembering the service and sacrifice of all involved in the Far East, without whom the freedoms we enjoy today would not have been possible.

We will remember them.
