Mullans robbed! Reward offered!

$4,560 in 1854 would be worth $160,000 today
The building, today a private home, was built by John Augustus Mathison in 1828 and served as Hudson’s first schoolhouse. In its earliest decades it was also used as a courthouse, a jail and place of worship until the school closed in 1847. Soon after, John Mathison’s son, Richard, began operating it as the local post office.

Ozark Ripley, "Dean of American Outdoor Men" and, from 1924 to 1939, a Hudson summer resident.
Each summer and fall, from the mid 1920s to the late 1930s, Hudson was home to one of the foremost and well-respected authorities on hunting, fishing, dog training and wildlife conservation in North America.
His real name was John Baptiste de Macklot Thompson. Originally hailing from Ripley, Tennessee, he went from being a seasoned, personable hunting and fishing guide in the Ozark mountains of Tennessee to the foremost North American authority on hunting, fishing, dog training and wildlife, much sought after as a speaker throughout the U.S and Canada. His pen name, Ozark Ripley, was suggested to him by his friend, the writer, Jack London (Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea Wolf, John Barleycorn). They got to know each other and became great friends when Thompson was acting as London's hunting and fishing guide in the Ozarks. Ripley had a natural gift for storytelling and, with his wealth of knowledge about the great outdoors and many gripping tales told around the campfire, London urged him to start writing seriously. Over his lifetime Ripley wrote several books considered Bibles for sportsmen, wrote weekly columns for newspapers, was editor of various hunting and fishing magazines and, as National Director for the Isaak Walton Foundation, preached wildlife conservation throughout North America. How, and why, did he come to live in Hudson? First of all, why not? During his time in Hudson the town was blossoming and a perfect place for him, his wife, Winifred, and their son, Demacklot (Mack) to live. He’d accepted a contract with the C.P.R. to promote outdoor tourism, allowing him to combine his love for the outdoors and the freedom to travel to his favourite hunting and fishing grounds in northern Ontario, northern Quebec and New Brunswick. From his many backwoods travels in those areas, and the friendships formed with his First Nations hunting companions, he became fluent in Cree and Ojibway. When he wasn’t hunting (which seemed to be most of the time) he was lecturing to both large or small groups throughout the country and occasionally speaking at the Masonic Temple (now the Masonic Temple and the War Memorial Library).
It's not surprising that, as charming as Hudson was (and is), Ozark Ripley (John Baptiste de Macklot Thompson) made it his summer home.

Mount Victoria Farm
T.B. Macaulay's daughter, Gertrude, with a friend at the edge of the escarpment, Mount Victoria Farm in 1910.
Gertrude grew up in Montreal, attended Westmount Academy and spent summers at Mount Victoria. Both she and her sister, Esther, graduated from McGill with Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1907. In 1923 Gertrude married Cecil Arthur Sutton and went on to dabble in writing. She won awards for her short stories "The Blue Hydrangea", "Theft from the Devil" and, in 1937, had a full-length novel, "Clue before Crime" serialized in a Canadian magazine. Her husband, Cecil, passed away in 1960. Gertrude Forster Macaulay Sutton died on September 18, 1979 at the age of 92.

"The residence of Capt. J. Gibb Carlsey, Como" (1913)

I find this interesting. Neepen Osen, as it was originally known (later Ellesmere and Como Inn) was built in the mid-1860s for Isaac Jones Gibb and his wife Mary. In this 1913 photograph the house is identified as being the residence of Capt. John Gibb Carsley, a member of a prominent Montreal mercantile family (Carsley's Department Store). In fact, it was inherited by his wife, Mary, a member of another prominent Montreal mercantile family (Gibb & Company) who was related to Isaac and Mary. Think of it as "Eaton's marries Morgan's".

Captain John Gibb Carsley (1876–1961) was a prominent Montreal-born officer and heir to one of Canada’s most successful early commercial legacies. The son of Samuel Carsley, the pioneering merchant behind the iconic S. Carsley Company department store, he was educated abroad at the Leys School in Cambridge, England, before returning to Quebec to marry Mary Helen Gibb. He entered elite military circles by commissioning into the 5th Regiment (Royal Highlanders of Canada) militia, earning a promotion to Captain in 1912. While utilizing this beautiful country residence as his seasonal home, Captain Carsley formally mobilized with the newly raised 73rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force on August 17, 1915. It was during this pivotal pre-deployment period that he organized, recruited, and took formal command of "A" Company. Promoted to Major in early 1916 just prior to sailing for Europe, he would go on to lead his company through the brutal, historic Western Front campaigns of the Somme and Vimy Ridge.

Notice is hereby given that John Whitlock, Esq. of Argenteuil, having, by deed passed on the eighth day of August last before the undersigned Notary, in behalf of William Whitlock and Charles Frederick Coley, both his children, purchased from Michael Sealy and Frances Hyde, his wife, two farms situate in the Seignory of Vaudreuil, and designated No. 33 and 34 above Cavagnal Point, containing each three arpents in front by twenty arpents in depth, and bounded in front by the Great or Ottawa River, in the rear by ungranted lands, on one side by William Grillon, No. 32, and on the other side John Mark Cranck Delesderniers, Esq. No. 35 with the buildings thereon erected; the present is to request all those who have some demands on the aforesaid premises, either by mortgage or other encumbrances, to produce them to the subscriber on or before the first day of January next, as otherwise he will avail himself of this advertisement.
