Grosse Isle Heritage Site

Grosse Isle Heritage Site Dedicated to the preservation of pioneer and railway buildings. The tall grass prairie is another important feature of the site.

The Heritage Site currently has several heritage buildings restored and open for visitors to the site during designated times. The pioneer village has expanded from the original jigger shack to include the Gunton Wait Station, Ridgeway Heritage House, East Rosser School, Emerson Train Station and a caboose. It is maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers, who are always welcoming of additional help.

Yearly Recap & Coming up in 2026

2025 was a year of meaningful improvements. We added cash machines to both the gift shop and canteen to make visits easier, and proudly opened our brand-new gift shop featuring local authors and artisans. Ridgeway Heritage House received a fresh coat of paint, and work began on interior renovations at Emerson Station, including plans for a special display room honouring our veterans.

And of course, despite the summer heat, our Canada Day celebration was a fantastic success, filled with games, activities, and strong community spirit.

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited to keep building momentum. Thanks to support from the FCC AgriSpirit Fund, we’ll be breaking ground on a new heritage garden. We’ll also be updating yard maintenance equipment thanks to the Interlake Community Foundation. We’ll be expanding resources for our heritage programming. And finally, we’ll also look to enhance vendor opportunities, thanks to Community Futures.

We’re deeply grateful for the continued enthusiasm and support that make all of this possible, and we look forward to another great year together. Our volunteers give what they can: a few hours a day, a few weeks a year, a few months at a time, and every contribution matters.

Our work truly is a labour of love, driven by passion for Grosse Isle, a shared desire to celebrate our heritage, and the dedication to keep showing up year after year.

We’re so pleased to share that we’ve been awarded an $800 grant from the Interlake Community Foundation! These funds will go directly toward our grounds keeping and maintenance efforts in 2026, helping us invest in capital costs like new electric equipment that makes the work easier, cleaner, and more efficient.

Our site welcomes over 12,000 visitors every year, and with such a small operating budget, every penny counts when it comes to keeping the grounds beautiful, safe, and welcoming. This support means we can better care for the space that so many families, volunteers, and community members enjoy throughout the season.

One of the biggest challenges has been maintaining the natural hills around our new nature playground, lovingly named Grandpa Jim’s Playground. It’s quickly become a favourite spot for kids, but those slopes have been nearly impossible to mow with our old equipment. Thanks to ICF’s generosity, we’ll soon have the right tools to make short work of it and keep the area looking its best.

We’re just one of many local organizations supported by ICF.

This year alone, they granted an incredible $59,393 to charitable groups across the Interlake. Foundations like ICF make community growth possible, ensuring places like ours can continue the daily, often unseen, work that keeps our towns vibrant and welcoming.

A huge thank you to Tracy Holod and the ICF team & board for their dedication, kindness, and continued belief in the value of local spaces and the people who care for them. You make it look easy, but we know it takes heart. đź’š

🚂✨ That’s a wrap on our 2025 season!

From May to October, we hosted over 45 trains (plus many charters and school groups), each one filled with memories, smiles, and community spirit.

We celebrated together on Canada Day, and throughout the season our passionate volunteer crew kept the heritage alive with fun, laughter, and a whole lot of heart.

This year also brought some exciting upgrades:
🛍️ Our brand-new Gift Shop opened its doors.
đź’ł Debit & credit machines arrived at the canteen (hello, convenience!).

We couldn’t have done it without our visitors, supporters, and incredible volunteers.

Thank you for being part of the journey. 💙 We’ll see you again when we kick things off on Mother’s Day 2026!
