In honor of Happy Cat, I will share one last "Happy Cat Report" from her better days. To all the cat, dog, horse, and creature lovers, may you be as loved and entertained as we have been with Happy Cat💙

The Happy Cat Report: I am so tired of plucking at the screen. It should not be that hard to have them ready and available to open the door for me with a pleasant greeting. Every 10 minutes or so is more than reasonable as it allows them time to forage and groom in between. How is it after all these years that these humans are still untrainable. How they were able to maintain any order prior to my reign is hard to imagine.

In her last heroic act, she delivered a mouse to the door. I marvelled at this. She is so proud. Either abandoned or lost, we discovered her surviving in the barn, in -30C about 15 years ago. Eventually we caught her and she began her life as the Princess of the house and Protector of the yard. Today Happy Cat leaves us. She has completed her assignment well. There was never a day in this home without love and nurturing on Happy's watch. 💔

This painting was inspired by the wild horses of Salt River and the lovely photography of Gary Odell. For those new to my page, I enjoy layering color and exploring beyond my usual painterly realism style. 💙

Could there be a more perfect day? My brain can sometimes be hard wired for negativity and yet when I look out, off the deck of this house, and see these horses I am so humbled. This photo makes me almost embarrassed of the time I have wasted not embracing every single moment of this beautiful life. As I get older I am starting to understand "what we focus on we attract". So to that end, I give thanks for this blessing and will "look for bunnies and flowers" as my mom would say. Find the joy in your day Poppets...there is good out there I promise.

"Blind Faith" - Continual Line Experiment! Keep your pencil on the canvas and draw without taking your eyes off the reference. Life is a bit like that too. We have to trust the process and never know how it will turn out; and yet even with imperfections and unexpected twists...it is still beautiful. (8 x 10 acrylic given away on this page in 2020)

A NOTE FOR ARTISTS who may be interested: 1st stage for this commissioned painting was done in thin watery layers of burnt umber acrylic. As I got more confident I went in and put in some darker lines and adjusted with finer brush. That jumble of tack makes sense to me...so hopefully as I block it in better it will be easier to follow. 2nd stage I typically like to build in the background to at least 50% finished. Still very ROUGH. I have to decide about the light...as I am working from several different photos. The tack on this horse is from a different photo...the horse I am going to paint is in more dramatic light...so I would have to punch up the sky... and that gives me a chance to pop more color into that water....hmm. It's still quite rough because I want to move into the horse and get a feel for him before putting too much more into the background. I purposefully went over the edge of the horse with my water as I find it impossible to paint background and have all the edges meet perfectly. Far easier to paint "lost and found" edges over top of the background when I build the horse back in fully. Once the next update is shown I will be better able to explain the water to you. I am having to somewhat create my own wave patterns...as the reference for the background includes a much smaller version of full horse and rider...so the waves are circled around them and don't make sense with the placement of a larger horse at the edge of the lake. What you are seeing with the water is the underpainting. I have to build in those mountain colors and more tree on the left and also have to start punching up the sky color on the waves and getting more exact with shapes. I share this to show that it is a process and many layers involved. Each painting goes through an "ugly stage" where values are not fully realized...maybe anatomy needs adjusted...and so on. Many will say "don't overpaint"....and they are probably right,...but with acrylic (considered one of the easiest mediums) I highly recommend overpainting the living crap out of it. That's the only way you really know what you've got. If you stay "safe" you might not know what you are really capable of achieving. Not everybody has the luxury of exploring art in this way...sometimes we have to just get a job done. All of that to say, whatever your process, I hope you are enjoying the adventure and trusting your process. I'll share more as it evolves. Happy creating!

⭐WISDOM OF THE CROWD...I have an idea 💡 Maybe it could be a WIN/WIN! Just going to throw this idea out into the universe and see what comes back. WHAT IF...somebody in Scotland, or the US or UK, or Canada...or Australia, or wherever the dream lands...What if... somebody knows somebody...and opens a door for my art to be represented in a "how did this just happen fabulous art gallery"! This would be an example of the type of work I see being of interest. 4 x 5ft...colorful, traditional meets contemporary. An unconventional approach perhaps....but why not. Us horse people know the value of a proper leg up! If somebody can get me in a door to try for this next big adventure, and we are accepted, I will return the favor with a painting. The painting shown is named "Let it Be" and was inspired by the lovely photography of Alina Gatterman. Acrylic. Sold at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Show in 2018. In my head all of the reasons not to post this are flashing before me. I am pushing the publish button in 5.4.3.2.1....ego flatlining🙈🤣
