Pretty good turnout of volunteers on Saturday saw quite a few different things being worked on. HEPC 46 was pulled outside for the first time in a year to get a bit of a bath. The paint scheme for the 25tonner is being worked out, and we think it will be a good one. There is no historic scheme for the engine, so we decided to do something that would tie in the history of our site with the locomotive.

Rob cleaned the windows on 62.118 & 62.129, so when you're in the cab, you can see out them now. Bob and Nelly continued working on the 25tonner. John was cutting grass, Ken and Mike were working on 46, Neil was working on the 25tonner, Hans was doing some work on E7, Arnold was w**d eating, and Ken and jacob were dealing with visitors.

Sunday Ken and Ken took the NRM display to the Ancaster train show at the fairgrounds. Not a bad day, and its always a fun show to take part in. Once again, another great weekend.

Another busy one at the shop on Saturday. The new batteries from Pro Battery Shops for the 25tonner were installed, and are working great. Glad to have this unit back in service as it makes moving some stuff around in the yard a lot easier. The 25T had to be moved to the centre track to continue the cosmetic restoration, so some other things had to be moved around first. One of the 2 JZ steam engines was moved forward to allow the Trackmobile & motorcar to go in the space between them. This also allows us to put the stairs in place so people can view the cab. With the motor not working on the south door, it really causes some issues for where/how to display items. The door had to be opened manually, by chain, which takes a good 20 minutes. Once the first step of moving the steam engine was done, both the 25 & 50 tonners were posed at the end of track. We also got a shot of the "work train" with the 25T, TH&B 2676 & CN 56452.

One item on the list was to get the bell working on NSCX 11. At some point the original air bell was replaced by an E bell. However, for some reason, that isn't working, and we have not been able to find the cause of why some of the electrical appliances are not working. SO, we knew there was air to the old bell (they only removed the clapper mechanism). So the bell was removed, and was swapped with the freshly painted bell from the 25tonner. 11 now has an operating bell. The bell from 11 will go on the 25tonner and be painted to match the final paint scheme of that engine. Over the last few weeks Bob also took the 25T air whistle home and cleaned it up and painted it. It was installed on Saturday, and is much louder than it's ever been since we've had it. That was the majority of the work that was done.

Thanks to Dave, Mike, Ken and Bob for switching around the equipment to put things in proper position for work. Ken was helping with our visitors and Bill was working on some prep work to one of the boxcars.

Big thanks to Scott at Pro Battery Shops in Thorold (8-1874 Highway 20, Thorold Ontario, L2V 5S1 905-892-8585) for sourcing and delivering the 4 new 8V batteries for our 1948 GE 25tonner. When we acquired the unit in November 2015, the batteries were a mix match of types, and weren't in good shape. In 2016 we reached out to Scott to have them replaced. It made sense to go back to him this time for the new set. Scott knew exactly what we needed and got them on the move as soon as possible. We very much appreciate the help and support from Pro Battery Shops.

This is all part of the restoration work happening on the locomotive, to keep it active for years to come. They will be installed on the weekend, and the engine will be moved to the middle track to have the rest of the cosmetic restoration done.

Really pleased with the progress around the shop. Work has been happening on a few items. The majority of the work has been on the cosmetic restoration of our GE 25tonner. A paint scheme is still being worked out, but we think we've come up with a good one that suits some of the railway history of the area. In addition to the repaint, we are also installing 3 new windows, and new batteries. It's getting closer to receiving a coat of primer. NSCX 11 has had some work done to it as well over the last 2 weekends. The rear angle c**k has been replaced so train air can be used when moving around certain equipment. There is still some sort of electrical issue as we have no wipers or extra lights working. The original air bell was replaced by an e bell, bit thats not functioning either. So the air bell has been removed and cleaned up, and we know there was air going to it (the clapper had been removed when the E bell was installed), so a replacement clapper has been installed and the air bell will be replaced.
Some displays have also been moved around and added in the office display area, and we're still working on some other changes. Wiring on the HO layout will continue this coming weekend, as will some of the final track repairs. Progress isnt always fast, but our volunteers are working hard to get things done.
If you're planning a visit to our site this summer, the Fort Erie Railroad Museum is also open and less than a mile away. You can visit both on the same day. Niagara's south coast has a lot to offer for day or weekend trips, right along Lake Erie.

Getting tired of the rain on the weekends. Mother Nature needs to smarten up. It was another soaker at the shop. Work was still done, but it was cool and wet. Nelly and Bob continued working on the 25tonner and almost all the paint is off now. Still prep work to happen, but it's really coming together. This coming weekend will be another busy one, especially if the weather is good. The grass barely looks like it was cut, so that will be dealt with. The south door still isn't working, so we'll have to open it manually and move the 25tonner onto the middle track. This will allow us to move it outside for work, making the shop quieter for our visitors. Work will continue on the HO layout as well as some safety railings at the end of the work platforms.

The weather may not be great, but we will still be open Saturday from 10am to 2pm. As a reminder to visitors, we are a working facility. Our members may be working on equipment restoration and repairs. We will do everything to make your visit a good one, but there may be noise, and some things may be a bit dirty. Please respect the work happening and stay back. However, should you have questions, our volunteers will be happy to answer them for you.

A bit behind on this weekends post as there were 3 days of work happening at the shop. As most know, we are a non profit, Charitable Organization, we rely mostly on donations to operate, and to fund our restoration projects. Rights now we are working on 2 painting projects. We are looking for donations to help offset some of the costs of these items, and donations can be made securely online at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/niagara-railway-museum-inc/ Donations can also be made at the Museum when we're open on Saturdays, They can also be mailed in, or e transfer to [email protected].

Our 2 painting projects are the cab of CN 9173. This has been an ongoing project for the last 2yrs, and we look forward to getting this piece looking great. Rob has been doing an amazing job, considering how it looked when it first arrived. Our 2nd project is the repaint of our 25tonner. Our friend Bob Merriam, (many may already know his work as you see equipment from Port Stanley Terminal Rail, Via Historical Association, and Ontario Southland Railway, to name a few). The work started this weekend, with Bob and Nelly working away Saturday and Sunday. Even just this work makes a big difference. Any donations to this projects are very greatly appreciated, and help cover some of the work.

Elsewhere, Hans repaired and reinstalled the side door on TH&B boarding car X-759. It makes a big difference having the windows and doors in place. Neil was doing some work on fitting a new trainline anglec**k on NSCX 11, John was cutting grass (Neverending, almost weekly task), Mike did more track work on the HO layout, and Ken and Ken were looking after visitors. Ken also did some painting to N flanger 56323 on Sunday. Allan built a new display box in the layout room, and some miscellaneous repairs.

Overall, a fantastic weekend with quite a bit done. Thanks to everyone who helped out on the weekend.

Quite a bit on the go for this weekend. Working on the 25tonner, CN 9173, the HO layout and general housekeeping. We are now open 10am-2pm and its supposed to (finally) be a decent day.

With our site now open Saturdays from 10-2 for the season, we are able to look at other events during the year. We are pleased to be heading back to the Niagara Antique Power Association and Show July 3-5. We will be in the display building for the weekend. Always some good stuff to see at this show like the steam powered sawmill, tractor pulls, tractor and engine displays, and of course, food.
