There's quite a bit of work happening behind the scenes. We are a week and a half away from RailDays and are still working on some things for that. We are pleased to have Nolans Lego train display back again, as this is always a hit with our guests.

Our Museum After Dark event on Saturday Sept 12th will give photographers a chance to shoot some of our equipment outside with the lights on. There will also be people available to pose for specific shots.

As we start to wind down our 2026 season, we still have a ways to go. The 25tonner is nearing completion of its new paint scheme, and CN 9173 will be next. CN 56323 is scheduled to have the roof/cupola finished this year as well. The final task with that car will be adapting the plow blades from CN 56452, which will give the car a more complete look. New signage is being made for the equipment. A lot of work is being done as we head into our 30th anniversary in 2027. We hope you'll visit us this season. We are still open Saturdays from 10a-2p until October 3rd, except sept 12/13, 10a-4p for RailDays.

Small crew on saturday, but a few things were worked on. Bill continued with the painting on CP 50721. The door has now bèen painted to match the rest of the car, and we hope to have the new (original) number applied shortly. We also continue to improve our signage for the equipment, with the 2nd one installed for the store/display cars. John continued cutting grass and Mike, Ken and Jacob were just cleaning up around the shop as we get ready for RailDays. Sunday saw Bob out to do some prep work on the 25tonner, getting it ready for the final colour. We are very excited to see this project so close to completion

A new addition to the collection, donated by Margaret Barrette, showing the Arch Bridge at Niagara Falls, in the original Grand Trunk Railway System frame. We look forward to displaying this with the Whirlpool Bridge model.

6 members were present on Saturday working on a few different projects. Allan was finishing off the modifications on the power converter on JZ 62.129. The lights had to be converted to our voltage from European, so this is now complete. He also worked on the power for the doors. Bill continued painting CP 401258 (soon to be its original number 50721). It will be great to see these cars cleaned up and ready for next season. Bill has also started getting some new signage made up for different pieces of equipment, with the first sign installed at 401258, denoting its use as a display car. We are always looking to improve displays and equipment, and this is a great addition. Ken was, as usual, dealing with the guests that were visiting. Hans has been working on the doors and windows for HEPC E7. This work is being done at home since he has the tools and equipment to do it properly there. The doors will end up with a darker stain, and the body will be black. E7 was modified from its original design in 1918 (side doors and hoods were changed), but it will be going back to close to its original look. Mike worked on more track on the HO layout, while Ken replaced the battery switch on NSCX 11 and took the sickle bar mower out to start cutting down the tall grass.

Things are really coming together as we are only a few weeks away from RailDays 2026. Our new pins have arrived and will go on sale at RailDays. The pins are being sold as a 3 pin set, for $30, for our 30th year in 2027(We wanted to start this early to raise funds for our 30th anniversary event). The pins include JZ 62.129, NSCX 11 and the 25tonner in its new paint scheme. Thanks to our volunteers who work hard to make things happen around the shop.

We are still open every Saturday, 10-2 rain or shine.

So much for a full day of rain. The storm ended early and it turned out to be an ok day. Bob continued working on the 25tonner, sanding the primer to prepare for one of the colours. Unfortunately, while it was dry out, the wind kind of prevented that paint from being applied today. Ken was dealing with our visitors and Bill worked on CP 401258. This car, built by Canadian Car & Foundry in 1956, will be returned to its as delivered number of 50721. Mike and Ken were working on NSCX 11 when it was discovered one of the battery disconnect switches failed. Once that issue was addressed, TH&B 2676 was moved to the middle track so CN Flanger 56452 could be moved to a position to allow the 2, 100lb switch frogs to be removed. This car is being looked at to have the plow blades removed and installed on our other Flanger, CN 56323, giving it a much more complete look. Other than that, it was a pretty easy day.

Great day today. Starting off with a big thanks to Pat from Beam Power and Utilities for coming out first thing this morning to have a look at our door motor. The motor failed 2 months ago, but we discovered today the motor was good. The issue was the set screws on the coupling came loose. Pat tightened it all up, and we're pleased to have this door back up and runnning. Mike worked on one of the last sections of track on the HO layout, an awkward area that had to have the city removed for access. Bill continued working on painting CP 401258 and got the 2nd coat of paint applied. With this car being worked on, we decided to start working on the other 2 boxcars and plan to have them painted this year as well. Jacob was sanding the rust spots, getting it cleaned up and prepped for painting. Ken was out cutting the grass, as groundskeeping is a neverending task at the site.

The best news was the work Allan has been doing on JZ 62.129. Neil had a special transformer built that will change the voltage from our 120v, to the 24v that the Yugoslavian engines run, and Allan has been fiddling with it to get it all hooked up. Today we saw the lights lit up for the first time. This includes 2 front/2rear headlights, 4 ground lights, and the cab dome/gauge light. We are looking forward to getting the engine outside for some night photos.

It was a smaller group of volunteers today, but we are really pleased with the work that was done. Our new pins, featuring 3 of our locomotives, will soon be on their way. We're quite pleased with how they're looking.

There is so much work happening, and a lot of exciting things coming up. This past weekend saw Mike doing more work on the HO layout, with track repairs on the hidden track under the city. More wiring will take place this weekend. Hans was working on the windows inside HEPC E7. Bill continued with painting the CP boxcar, with a second coat of white on the lettering. Rob is prepping the old flanger to have the plow blades removed. Bob was back both saturday and Sunday working on the 25tonner. The white layer has been applied, and the other colours will follow. We are holding off on talking about the actual colour scheme, until it is finished, but we feel it will look great.

A lot of work is being done as we prepare for our 30th anniversary in 2027. The GE will likely be done this year, well before our anniversary, and that's fine, as there's many other projects to work on. One of the special products we're releasing later this year is a special lapel pin set. This very limited 3 pin set will feature 1 of our Yugoslavian steam engines, NSCX 11, and the 25tonner, in its new paint. This custom made set will sell for $30 and all proceeds will go towards the restoration of the 25tonner. We are really looking forward to the pins, as the proofs look fantastic.

Other work bwing planned is the completion of the cosmetic restoration of the cab for CN 9173. This involves finishing the prep on the engine man's side, and then painting. Removal of the plow blades from CN 56452, which will then be reinstalled for display on CN 56323. This will make the car look like a Flanger , and not a caboose. We are also working to finish odf the roof work and cupola repairs on the car. While ot at the top of thw list, we have started to work on a plan for TH&B X-759, the Carpenters Boarding Car. Being built in 1913, it does have some challenges, and we are working on figuring out the best move forward. We are also hoping to paint our 2 CP boxcar in the red scheme.

Thankyou to everyone who stopped by for a visit this weekend. We know there was a lot going on, and we appreciate the support.

Quite a bit was worked on and planned. Bill was working on the CP boxcar, and decided to tackle the lettering by hand. First coat doesn't look too bad. He has some cleaning up to do, but it's nice to see the car in fresh paint and part of its lettering. The white on the multimark on one of the other cars was painted as well, since he already had the white open. There was a bit of work done on the HO layout. We managed to get a train running, but are still having some issues, so, work will continue on that. (A short video is in the comments). Rob and Neil were looking at CN Flanger 56452. This was the former tourist info booth in welland. The body was burned by vandals and scrapped. The remaining frame/wheels/plow blades were donated by Wayne Ettinger years ago. Originally we thought about rebuilding this car, but with the arrival of CN 56323 from Genaire, our plans have changed. Not that we needed another bigger project, but we will be removing the plow blades off 56452, and installing them on 56323. This will make the car look more like a Flanger and less like a caboose. Other work will continue on repainting the NSC built CP boxcars, and finishing CN 9173.

There is a lot of work going on as we head into our 30th anniversary in 2027. For the remainder of 2026, a difference will be noticed on every visit, and some equipment may not be open on a particular day. Our volunteers are working very hard to plan out the work and see it through, and we appreciate every bit of what they do. We can always use more help, it takes a lot of people to make everything work.
