October is Circular Economy Month! โ™บโŸณโ€โ€๐–ฆน

This is a perfect time to highlight the work of Artist Material Fund. Presented by the Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) in partnership with Industrial Arts' Steelcase Art Projects (SAP) and the City of Markham Public Art Program, the Artist Material Fund reimagines what happens to the materials left behind after exhibitions, installations, and creative projects. Rather than sending them to landfill, AMF redistributes these resources free of charge to artists and the public, extending their life through new creative work and reducing environmental impact.

AMF is open now until December 5, 2026.
Swipe through to see upcoming workshops & events!
Visit Artist Material Fund @ Industrial Arts
7441 Victoria Park Ave, Unit 8, Markham - Access is at the back of the building via the receiving doors.

The Artist Material Fund is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

These squares represent the staffโ€™s thoughts and commitments woven together to form a collaborative quilt to honour residential school survivors, raise awareness, and advance the path toward reconciliation.

This quilt is a nod to the ๐™Œ๐™ช๐™ž๐™ก๐™ฉ๐™จ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™Ž๐™ช๐™ง๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™ค๐™ง๐™จ initiative started by Vanessa Genier, offering handmade quilts to Residential School Survivors, Day School Survivors, Sixties Scoop Survivors, and their families. Each quilt stands as a quiet offering of love, a reminder that Survivors are seen, honoured, and never forgotten.

Our commitment extends beyond acknowledgment. We recognize the principles of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenantโ€”an enduring agreement among the nations of the Great Lakes region emphasizing peaceful coexistence, shared responsibility for the land, and respect for all living thingsโ€”and we accept our place within that responsibility.

As stewards of the largest collection of contemporary Canadian ceramics, we feel this responsibility in a particular way. Clay is one of the Earthโ€™s oldest languages. It carries memory, identity, and knowledge across time. In many Indigenous teachings, the Earth is understood not as a resource but as a living relation. When we celebrate ceramic art, we celebrate a living relationship between human hands, cultural knowledge, and the Earth beneath us.

Our quilt is displayed at our Lakeshore entrance in the Living Room. To learn more visit quiltsforsurvivors.ca

The Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $60,000 in operating funding from the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) through the Ontario Arts Operating Fund, Visual Arts program โ€” representing a 160.9% increase in the Galleryโ€™s operating grant.

The significant increase comes at an important moment for the AGB as it advances a new strategic direction focused on delivering meaningful artistic and community impact today while building the capacity for its future.

By mid-August, the AGB had already welcomed more than 31,000 recorded visitors in 2026 โ€” nearly matching total recorded attendance for all of 2025. Beyond Gallery visits, more than 2,600 people had participated in 134 learning and public programs, from camps and Family Open Studios to workshops, tours and artist-led activities. Together, these numbers reflect an institution that is not only being visited, but increasingly being used, experienced, and shaped by its community. At the same time, the Gallery is strengthening its role as a place where artists do more than present finished work through exhibitions, residencies, mentorship, studios, research, and public participation.

To read the full press release visit https://agb.life/media/

We would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council | Conseil des arts de lโ€™Ontario and the Government of Ontario.

For over 30 years he worked on establishing the AGBโ€™s Permanent Collection as the largest contemporary Canadian ceramics collection in the world. Over his tenure as Curator of the Collection, he grew the collection from less than 100 works to over 3,500 with representation from across the country. He promoted Canadian ceramics across our borders with exhibitions such as Fire + Earth, which travelled across Canada and Japan, and Paul Mathieu โ€“ A Survey that was developed for the 1998 Biennial Meeting of the International Academy of Ceramics.

Beyond the AGB, Jonathan was a visual arts instructor for over 35 years at the Dundas Valley School of Art and Mohawk College Continuing Education. He participated in numerous jurying duties for pottery guilds across Ontario, as well as Best in Show at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (2003, 2015), the Royal Botanical Gardensโ€™ Escapement Garden Donors Competition (2009), and the City of Burlingtonโ€™s Art in Public Places Competition (2010).

Jonathan held the positions of Chairman of the Faculty Committee at the Dundas Valley School of Art (1981-1987), Past Faculty Board President at the Dundas Valley School of Art for two years, a member of the Board of Directors for FUSION: the Ontario Clay and Glass Association (1988- 1994), and Director of Program Development/Exhibitions for FUSION (2003-2007).

His contributions did not go unnoticed as he was the recipient of the John Mather Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to Crafts in Ontario from the Ontario Craft Council in 2000, and the Burlington150 Award in 2017.

Today, the Art Gallery of Burlington joins the ceramic and art communities in mourning, but also in celebration for Jonathan's contributions throughout his career.

He will be deeply missed.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for the opening reception of It was a special gathering and we are grateful for the artists, exhibition team, and community that attended.

Curated by Albany Sutherland, this exhibition features artists Pat Bruderer (Halfmoon Woman), Helen Pelletier, Amber Sandy, Seth Arcand, and the late Angelique Merasty. All of which have their own relationship with birch bark, (Wiigwas/waskway).

A group of us were lucky to learn the traditional art of birch bark biting from Pat Bruderer in the morning before the opening. Angelique Merasty, among the few birch bark biters of her generation, preserved this vital cultural practice during a period when it risked being lost entirely. This legacy continues through Pat.

We invite you to explore the intricacies and intergenerational knowledge living within ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜จ / ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฌ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ / ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ, on now until January 3, 2027.
