Experimental still life

Look at the perspective, the use of color, the brushwork. James Ensor fully embraces avant-garde. The table has surrendered entirely to the flatness of the canvas. Depth is no longer defined by lines, but by the masterful interplay of light and shadow, executed with bold, sweeping brushstrokes in earthy tones. Dots of striking scarlet red draw the attention, evoking a richness in the interior. Bright blue accents are subtly scattered across the painting, bringing balance to the composition. With this still life, Ensor foreshadows expressionism, a movement that would only emerge in Belgium years later.

Roger Raveel's oeuvre is typically rooted in the reality around him. However, this painting should be regarded as an 'imaginary' landscape, derived from various visual impressions. It represents a synthesis of the landscape, featuring in the foreground a sloping rectangular orange-brown plane symbolizing a ploughed field, followed by a lush green area and the abstract silhouette of a tree. In the background, a cloudless sky lends a sense of tranquility to the composition.

This work will be part of the catalogue of the upcoming auction of March 1st, 2025

“In terms of ideas the artist is free even to surprise himself.”
Sol LeWitt, a pioneer of conceptual art, reveals a freer side in the work Squiggly brushstrokes (1996). With winding lines and bold colors, he creates energetic, rhythmic compositions that blend freedom and structure. This work showcases his playful approach to movement, pattern and idea - a perfect balance between order and chaos.

The gallery is going into holiday mode from December 22nd, 2024 until January 3rd, 2025. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025!

The past few weeks, our suitcases have served us well. They helped carry our belongings to faraway destinations, from white sandy beaches to high peaks in the mountains. But now the time has come to stow them away and get back to work.

Next on our calender: Auction 19 October 2024, Contemporary, Modern and Old Masters.
Consignment for this auction is possible until Saturday August 31st.

Let the games begin. Today marks the beginning of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Right now, the city is decorated with the Olympic colours … but once upon a time, Christo had envisioned a project to wrap the Parisian trees of the Champs Elysées, creating a sweeping perspectival frame for the Arc the Triomphe. A project that unfortunately never became a reality.

Team De Vuyst wishes all the athletes good luck and a golden future.

It feels like summer has finally arrived. These hot days call for a dip in the sea to cool down. And if a real sea is just a little too far away, you can at least enjoy this artwork of the Italian sea in Bordighera by Georges Buysse.

Still life with a personality

“When I paint an apple or an orange, I know that people will be able to recognize that it is mine and it was me who painted it, because what I try to do is give each element I paint, down to the simplest ones, a personality that comes from a deep conviction.”

“Still life with bananas” (1981) is painted in the typical Boterian style with round, heavy shapes and large, velvety color areas. The frontality of the arrangement is softened by a few subtle diagonal lines. The drama increases thanks to the claustrophobic framing, sided by a draped curtain. The still life is put on a stage, where the banana plays a starring role.

Summer in the Riviera

The French painter Raoul Dufy has his roots in Le Havre, Normandy, yet it’s mainly the south of Europe that takes center stage in his artworks. The composition of “Oliviers à Golfe-Juan” appears effortless and easy. Dufy juggles with colors and shapes as if it were nothing. But just like a juggler, balance and precision are essential to achieve an elegance. The light and the artists’ elegant style make this view dance. Like no other, Dufy had the gift of portraying music and fun on canvas. He did not pretend to create an illusion of reality, with precise rendering of perspective or volume, but “Oliviers à Golfe-Juan” is a magical, immaterial landscape that is closer to poetry.
