Salomé Berger

In the nine small paintings from her ongoing New Places series, she builds up layers, paints over them and removes parts of the surface. These paintings are more intimate, with complex shifts in color and a wind-swept feeling. The image emerges through these revisions and subtractions. As she enlarges, crops and partly erases the fragments, their scale changes, and a shape that seemed to belong to a body or a plant can become harder to identify.

Salomé Berger (born 1990 in Bern, Switzerland) lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. She studied at the University of Fine Arts Münster from 2013 to 2022 in the class of Professor Cornelius Völker, completing her Akademiebrief in 2022.

Salomé begins with the human body and the botanical world. Her paintings develop through shifts in scale, form and shape. Her years of dance and theater training inform the reaching of the limbs or the extension of the torso. She finds similar movements in plants stretching toward the sun, in dense masses of overlapping leaves and in shapes found in nature or collected in books.

Her large works such as Rising and Off Stage V proceed by placing fragments of this imagery beside and against each other. There is space between the forms, which seem to turn into one another. These have a grand presence, as if on stage.

Entr'acte d'été

In opera, an entr'acte (intermezzo in Italian) is the music, and occasionally a brief performance that carries the audience from one act to another. Serving as a bridge within the larger drama, it prepares what follows while allowing space for reflection on what has come before.

Entr'acte d'été occupies a similar position within the program of Galerie Peter Gaugy. Closing one season and anticipating the next, the exhibition brings together selected works by artists shown by the gallery over the recent season.

Benjamin Blanc (London/Paris) plays with the tensions of figuration within the confines of interior spaces. A gap formed by a hand resting on a hip creates a vacuum, a limp wrist lingers, a tie tries to fly off a collar. He investigates friction, or its absence, between bodies oscillating between malleability and stiffness.
