Entr'acte d'été

In opera, an entr'acte (intermezzo in Italian) is the music, and occasionally a brief performance that carries the audience from one act to another. Serving as a bridge within the larger drama, it prepares what follows while allowing space for reflection on what has come before.

Entr'acte d'été occupies a similar position within the program of Galerie Peter Gaugy. Closing one season and anticipating the next, the exhibition brings together selected works by artists shown by the gallery over the recent season.

Benjamin Blanc (London/Paris) plays with the tensions of figuration within the confines of interior spaces. A gap formed by a hand resting on a hip creates a vacuum, a limp wrist lingers, a tie tries to fly off a collar. He investigates friction, or its absence, between bodies oscillating between malleability and stiffness.

Dominika Kováčiková (Banská Bystrica) includes themes of girlhood, sexuality, trauma, and irony in her paintings. Drawing from a variety of sources including horror films, her depictions of soft feminine figures are not as innocent as they seem, and hint at a capacity for aggression, whether in self-protection or simply because they want to.

Peter Gaugy | Brussels presents Post-Coital, Have a Cigarette, a group exhibition bringing together six artists from five different countries. The exhibition takes as its point of departure the suspended state after a climax, relief mixed with awkwardness, the brief lull when desire is suddenly abated and something more vulnerable appears in its place. This is not necessarily sexual, but rather the moment right after a charged event, before the world recomposes.
