We are pleased to introduce the two selected curators of the Curatorial Laboratory – Mentoring Program for Emerging Curators!

Since September, we've been working closely together, and we're now in the second month of this journey. Over the course of the program, curators have been diving deep into the process of conceptualizing, researching, and developing an exhibition from the ground up  and we couldn't be more excited to share where this journey is leading.

The program will culminate in an exhibition, opening on November 18th, save the date and join us in celebrating their work. ✨️

Rosa Nahid Bertsch is an artistic researcher based in Vienna, currently finishing her Master’s in Critical Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. In her work, she explores the imagery of resistance and revolutions and how political discourse materializes. She draws on emancipatory modes of aesthetic and cultural production, creating space for collective reflection, exchange, and collaborative artistic practices.

We are pleased to introduce the two selected curators of the Curatorial Laboratory – Mentoring Program for Emerging Curators!

Since September, we've been working closely together, and we're now in the second month of this journey. Over the course of the program, curators have been diving deep into the process of conceptualizing, researching, and developing an exhibition from the ground up  and we couldn't be more excited to share where this journey is leading.

The program will culminate in an exhibition, opening on November 18th, save the date and join us in celebrating their work. ✨️

Gabriel Zúñiga is a dancer, performer, choreographer, researcher, and curator. Her artistic practice revolves around transfiguration, metamorphosis, and impermanence as a universal truth that liberates every being from the illusion of eternity, understanding movement as a means against subordination.

As a curator, her work focuses on creating spaces of encounter where the body is the axis of reconstruction. Her involvement with La Morgue Festival—a dance and performance project—has allowed her to develop a curatorial approach that interweaves the q***r, the historical, and the comedic, where diverse communities meet without hierarchies or institutional affiliations.
Her curatorial approach mobilizes meaning and reclaims space through themes addressing extraction, violence, and death, but also regeneration, rehabilitation, and rebirth. She is interested in the insanity of a society that treats bodies as if they exist to be instrumentalized and destroyed.

Only a few days left to sign up for our upcoming workshop with artist and researcher Patrícia J. Reis!

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, we will explore the ethical, emotional, and sensory dimensions of AI-driven human-machine interaction by approaching the body as a “black box” both as an artistic strategy and as a critical lens through which to examine how interactive technologies—and AI in particular—engage with bodies.

Patrícia J. Reis is a media artist, researcher, and lecturer based in Vienna. Her practice engages critical and sensorial approaches to technology, employing hacking and ecofeminism to question systems of control and address the complexity of contemporary technological and social systems. She lectures at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she leads the Elise Richter PEEK research project Hacking the Body as the Black Box.

This event is supported by MA7, BMWKMS, 15. District, and Mz*Baltazar’s Laboratory.

✨Tactile Intelligence: Rethinking Consent Through Embodied AI Prototyping✨

We are happy to announce that the postponed workshop with Patrícia J. Reis, organized in collaboration with Mz*Baltazar’s Laboratory, originally as a part of Neurotopias’ public program, is back on schedule!

Join us on October 3, 2026, to explore the ethical, emotional, and sensory dimensions of AI-driven human-machine interaction. Participants will engage with simple AI models and DIY touch-responsive interfaces using microcontrollers and open-source machine learning tools to examine how consent, agency, and embodiment can be both problematic and reimagined within artificially automated systems. Beginners are also welcome; no prior experience is required.

Last days to see ‚Domestic Astronomy‘ by Dalia Mikonytė, Adomas Žudys, Marija Jociūtė, and Lina Simutytė at Improper Walls.

The exhibition’s point of departure is the first photo/visualisation of a black hole created in 2019. As a result, the image of the black hole became an extraordinary visual analogy of a boundless universe. The strange phenomena that occur in space force us to have a deeper understanding of basic conceptions of time, information, causality, necessity, contingency, and determinism. With the exhibition “Domestic Astronomy” artists open up about their cosmologies by analyzing and interpreting the alluring phenomenon of the visuality of space using analogue photography, photo collage, point cloud aesthetics, photogrammetry and other 3D techniques.

We welcome anna menecia antenete hambira to the Rent Free Summer at Improper Walls ♡,
(she / her) (german / namibian) artist & lecturer based in Vienna, manifests as amaaena.

anna creates garments, sculptures, still images, digital collages, artistic videos, experimental short films and installations. her work deals with the topics of resistance, the children of the diaspora, fragmented identity, dressing- and community- practices, archives and remembrance, grief and joy _ all in context of decolonial research, intersectional feminism and the q***r community.

amaaena’s aim for the period of the rent free summer at Improper Walls is to find rest and process in her practice. she will create an experimental space where light can meet textile, sound can breathe and traces can unfold. an empty space, which will be filled with remembrance and grief. where healing can softly manifest through the rhythm of textile techniques. finally, a space where bodies meet. coming together to form a glitch, embracing the dark spots to create a speculative archive of diasporic fragments.

🔸Introducing the Invited Mentors of the Curatorial Laboratory Program 🔸 - Part 4

andrea ancira is an editor, curator and cultural organiser based between Mexico City, Guatemala City and Vienna. Her research and practice sit at the intersection of archival work, editing and translation, which she uses to explore how collective memory, identity and historical narratives are underpinned by power structures. Since 2017, she has co-directed , a transfeminist editorial project that approaches publishing as a collaborative and experimental space for study, translation and relation. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the Institute of Art Theory and Cultural Studies, and is part of ***rcareclubvienna and the .

We are delighted to welcome Andrea as the fourth and final invited mentor of the Curatorial Laboratory Program! With this, we conclude the introductions of our four Invited Mentors and we look forward to the diverse perspectives each of them will contribute to the program.

🔸Introducing the Invited Mentors of the Curatorial Laboratory Program 🔸 - Part 3

Eva Fischer is an independent curator, festival director, and cultural manager in post-digital art, critical media and art, science and technology. As a trained art historian, she has been director of the media art festival since 2021. In 2007 she initiated , which became known as the Vienna Festival for Audiovisual Art and has been operating as a platform for immersive art and technology since 2016. Between 2016 and 2019 she was head of production at the in Graz and between 2023 and 2025 COO of the in Vienna. Since 2011 she has been teaching at various universities and Austrian universities of applied science.

We’re thrilled to welcome Eva as part of the Curatorial Laboratory mentoring team!

Through a discussion and collaborative concept prototyping, we will critically examine how social and gender-based inequalities are reflected in devices, platforms, and digital content, and how these dynamics shape experiences of participation, accessibility, and care.
