In his ongoing Portrait series, Syed Hussain has painted hundreds of portraits of children from the Hazara community, an ethnic minority with roots in Afghanistan and a significant presence in Quetta, Pakistan, where the artist was born.

Trained in the Indo-Persian tradition of miniature painting, Hussain works with gouache and gold leaf on wasli paper, using a brush made from a single squirrel-tail hair and a magnifying glass to render each detail by hand.

The portraits resemble identity documents, complete with handwritten names, ages and official stamps. Each is individually numbered, forming part of an expanding archive that preserves the identities of children from a community whose history has often been marked by displacement and marginalization.

MEET THE ARTIST | Kris Knight

We’re pleased to introduce Kris Knight, one of three artists of our new exhibition, now open in Brussels.

Born in Windsor, Canada, and now based in Toronto, Knight creates intimate, often enigmatic portraits that draws on Romantic and Symbolist lineages as well as 18th-century French portraiture.

Through his depictions of tenderness and vulnerability, he explores different expressions of masculinity, q***rness and intimacy. His figures often appear caught between openness and reserve, suggesting personal stories that remain partly concealed.

Knight combines soft pastel tones with delicate attention to expression and detail. Drawing on personal photographs, found imagery and floral symbolism, he brings together contemporary subjects and historical references, creating paintings that move between personal memory and the every day.

Rooted in Rumi’s image of a ‘field’ beyond moral absolutes, where our differences can coexist and enrich each other, the exhibition approaches identity not as something static and established but rather as a site of continuous adaptation: of gestures, inherited forms, private rituals, and public expression. The exhibition suggests that a sense of belonging and estrangement, memory and invention, intimacy and spectacle are all aspects of contemporary selfhood. This is not a show about neat typologies. Rather, it is an invitation to consider the provisional and fragile elements that make up individual lives.

MEET THE ARTIST | Alireza Shojaian

We’re pleased to introduce ALIREZA SHOJAIAN, one of three artists featured in our upcoming exhibition, opening next week in Brussels.

Born in Tehran and now based in Paris, Shojaian draws on classical painting and Persian cultural heritage to create intimate portraits of men.

Through his depictions of male tenderness and desire, he challenges conventional representations of masculinity. His personal experience of exile and censorship also informs his work, addressing the visibility and representation of q***r lives in societies where homosexuality is criminalised or suppressed.

His careful attention to the body, particularly the rendering of skin, hair and physical contact, gives his paintings a strong sense of intimacy. By bringing these subjects into the traditions of classical portraiture, Shojaian offers a different perspective on how masculinity and male affection can be represented.

‘Immolation’ is a self-portrait of the artist in mourning, their face surrounded by flames while remaining intact. Together with the half-full, half-empty glass of water, the image considers resilience as the ability to move through a potentially destructive experience without being consumed by it. The title’s association with sacrifice by fire heightens the tension between destruction and endurance, connecting the work to Martin’s wider exploration of grief and emotional intensity in this exhibition.

Our annual exhibition dedicated to student artists will be back in January 2027 for its second edition, and we are now taking applications. Selected works will be presented in a month-long exhibition at the gallery.

Watercolours by Robert Martin.

The eight watercolours in Martin’s exhibition translate the visual language of stained glass onto paper. Birds, snakes, leaves and other natural forms are set within intricate structures of colour, line and repeated geometry. Circles radiate outwards, forms overlap and divide, and figures emerge from within these carefully constructed patterns.

The transparency of watercolour gives the works a sense of light passing through them, while their strong outlines and symmetry hold each composition firmly in place. They become images to be looked through as much as looked at.
