Opening tonight: Draw The World Awake by Walter Van Beirendonck.

For this exhibition, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde brings together 155 original design drawings that offer a rare insight into the artist’s creative process. Created at the earliest stages of a collection, these works reveal the imagination, intuition and visual freedom that have become synonymous with Van Beirendonck’s practice.

The three Neon Shadow drawings presented here embody that spirit. Vibrant, playful and uncompromising, they demonstrate how a single drawing can already contain the energy of an entire world waiting to unfold.

Join us tonight (18H-20H) for the opening and discover the exhibition firsthand.

A glimpse into The Way Things Settle.

Bernd Lohaus’ work unfolds through a language of reduction, where material, gesture and thought remain closely intertwined. Pigment and space are not used to construct images, but to create moments of presence. Fragments that invite attention rather than demand it.

The exhibition moves at a different pace. It asks for time, for stillness, for a way of looking that allows meaning to emerge gradually. In this quiet concentration, Lohaus’ works become less about what is shown, and more about what is experienced: weight, relation, and the subtle tension between presence and absence.

On view at the gallery.

A glimpse into Draw The World Awake.

Bringing together 155 original design drawings, this exhibition offers a rare look into the imaginative universe of Walter Van Beirendonck. Created at the beginning of the design process, these works reveal where ideas first emerge, before they become garments, shows or collections.

The drawings presented here move between fantasy, humour and experimentation. Populated by curious figures, playful symbols and vivid colours, they embody the freedom that has defined Van Beirendonck’s practice for decades. Each sheet becomes a world of its own, where intuition and imagination take the lead.

Featured works:

Neon Shadow A3 — WVB164
Wir War A3 — WVB168
Banana Wink Boom A3 — WVB178
Wonderland A4 — WVB004
Wonderland A4 — WVB009
Stop terrorizing our world A4 — WVB029

On view at the gallery until June 21, 2026.

Opening June 5: Draw The World Awake by Walter Van Beirendonck.

In the context of the first edition of Antwerp Fashion Festival, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde presents an exhibition bringing together 155 original design drawings by Walter Van Beirendonck. Created at the very beginning of the design process, these works reveal the moment where an entire collection first comes to life.

Far more than preparatory sketches, the drawings contain the essence of Van Beirendonck’s creative universe. Colour, text, symbols, characters, styling and attitude emerge simultaneously, giving shape to the radical imagination and playful freedom that have defined his work for decades.

The first three drawings presented here span different moments within his practice, offering a glimpse into the visual language that continues to make Walter Van Beirendonck one of the most influential voices in contemporary fashion.

Polly Huyghe on colour, optimism and irrational fears.

For The Wunderwall Enlarged, Huyghe presents ceramic works inspired by personal fears and anxieties, the kind that may seem irrational, yet continue to quietly linger in the background. Through playful forms and vivid colours, these emotions are transformed into something lighter, softer and more humorous.

“The sun is always shining with me,” she says, a sense of optimism that runs throughout her work and reshapes reality into an alternative, more colourful world.

Now on view as part of The Wunderwall Enlarged at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde through 21 June 2026.

A glimpse into The Wunderwall Enlarged.

What began as an intuitive collection of small works by emerging artists has grown into a dynamic and evolving platform within the gallery. In this expanded version, the Wunderwall unfolds as an immersive, floor-to-ceiling installation, a space where multiple voices meet, overlap and resonate.

Each work carries its own perspective, yet together they form a larger constellation shaped by dialogue, trust and long-term engagement. The presentation reflects a belief in the importance of young artists: as those who question, experiment and open up new ways of seeing the world around us.

Rather than a fixed structure, The Wunderwall Enlarged remains in motion, a living environment where discovery continues to unfold over time.
On view at the gallery.

We are pleased to present a special presentation of previously unseen works by Walter Van Beirendonck, on view from June 4 to 7 as part of Antwerp Fashion Festival.

Known internationally for his groundbreaking contribution to fashion, this presentation shifts the focus towards the origin of Walter Van Beirendonck’s visual universe: works on paper created directly from his artistic practice. Bold in colour, unmistakable in form, and deeply intuitive in materiality, these works offer a rare insight into the foundations of his distinctive visual language, where art and fashion remain inseparably intertwined.

A unique opportunity to discover another dimension of one of Belgium’s most influential creative voices.
On view at the gallery from June 4–7, as part of Antwerp Fashion Festival.

Exhibition continues until June 21, 2026.

A view into The Wunderwall Enlarged.

What began as an intuitive gesture, collecting small, accessible works by emerging artists, has grown into a central, living element of the gallery. The Wunderwall Enlarged brings this vision to its fullest expression: an immersive, floor-to-ceiling constellation where practices meet, overlap and evolve together.
Each work carries its own voice, yet it is in their proximity that something larger unfolds. Connections appear, tensions arise, and unexpected dialogues take shape. The wall becomes more than a presentation, it becomes a space of exchange, shaped by trust, attention and long-term commitment to artists at different stages of their careers.
At its core, The Wunderwall reflects a belief in the importance of emerging artists: not as a separate category, but as an essential force within the wider ecosystem of art. It is here that new ideas take form, where risk and experimentation remain visible, and where collectors are invited into a process of discovery.

On view at the gallery.

Daniëlle Hoogendoorn on flowers, colour and preserving fleeting moments.

For The Wunderwall Enlarged, Hoogendoorn presents ceramic vases with flowers inspired by those growing in her own garden. Rooted in ideas of transience and permanence, the works transform fragile, short-lived flowers into objects that continue to exist over time.

“Everybody has a different interpretation of flowers,” she reflects, moving between gratitude, sadness, beauty and memory.

Now on view as part of The Wunderwall Enlarged at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde through 21 June 2026.
