James Ensor Scènes de la vie du Christ, 1921

James Ensor turns the life of Christ into a strange, colourful theatre of angels, monsters, crowds and carnival.

For Scènes de la vie du Christ, Ensor looks back to the medieval world where the sacred and the grotesque could exist side by side. But these are not simply biblical scenes. Christ Walking on Water, Christ Calming the Waters, The Entry of Christ into Brussels, Christ Mocked also reflect Ensor himself, his imagination, his sense of humour, and his struggle against the conventions of his time.

In brilliant reds, blues, yellows and greens, the familiar becomes uncanny. Crowds turn into spectacles, monsters resemble Gothic gargoyles, and religious stories become visions of light, chaos and celebration.

As Ensor put it: what the untrained eye sees as “disorder, chaos, and inaccuracy”, the artist sees as the subtle play of light.

Art triumphing over darkness.

A table, a deck of cards, a moment held still.

In Still Life with Playing Cards (1948), Jean Brusselmans turns an everyday scene into a carefully balanced composition. Shape, colour and perspective give the familiar subject its own distinct rhythm.

The work offers another glimpse into the visual language of Brusselmans, ahead of our upcoming exhibition dedicated to the Belgian painter.

We have already assembled a strong selection of works for the exhibition. Do you have a work by Jean Brusselmans in your collection that you would like to inform us about? We would be pleased to hear from you at [email protected].

Opening this Saturday: REFUGE Pavilion.

This render reveals the design for the new pavilion by artist Ives Maes and designer Samyra Moumouh, opening this August in Park Baron Casier, Waregem.

When art becomes an act of resistance.

In 1937, Pablo Picasso created Sueño y mentira de Franco (The Dream and Lie of Franco): 18 etched scenes responding to the Spanish Civil War and the violence of Franco’s regime.

After the bombing of Guernica, Picasso’s imagery became increasingly confrontational. The portfolio was accompanied by a poem, while proceeds from its sale were used to support the Spanish Republican cause.

A powerful example of how the printed portfolio can move beyond paper and become a political voice.
