NOW ON SHOW | Douglas Kirsop - North West: Landscape & Abstraction 🎨

Ancient ranges. Vast skies. Moving water. Ochre earth.

The changing light of the Australian North West has drawn Douglas Kirsop back to the region throughout his career - and it comes alive in his latest body of work.

Shaped by his travels through the Kimberley and Pilbara, this solo exhibition moves between detailed observation and pure abstraction - colour, movement, light and form responding to the raw beauty and enduring presence of one of Australia’s most extraordinary regions.

For Douglas, painting isn’t about recording what lies before him - it’s a way of responding to the experience of place.

Thank you to our Artists in Residence ! 🎨

What a wonderful few weeks it’s been in the Gallery.

We were lucky enough to welcome six artists into the gallery as part of our Artist in Residence program, and it brought such a lovely energy to the space.

Our visitors loved meeting you, hearing the stories behind your work and seeing you in action — whether discovering your art for the first time or reconnecting with an artist they already knew. The conversations, demonstrations and connections made this year’s Studio Gallery Artist’s in Residence feel especially special.

Thank you for sharing your time, talent and passion with us. We’re already looking forward to MRROS Artist in Residence 2027 - perhaps a little bigger and better !

Herman Pekel joined us live in the gallery this weekend 🎨

Impressions from a wonderful artist talk and demonstration - fearless watercolour painted in real time, in front of a crowd that hung on every brushstroke.

Herman’s workshops are renowned for good reason, and this one was no exception.

SUE EVA | ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Joining us next at The Studio Gallery is Sue Eva, in residence across five days this September.

Sue’s beautifully considered still life paintings find something special in familiar objects. With a refined approach to light, composition and detail, her work brings together treasured vessels, ceramics and collected pieces, transforming the everyday into quiet, elegant studies.

During her residency, Sue will be spending time in the gallery alongside her work — sharing more about her inspiration, technique and creative process with visitors.

PAULA WIEGMINK | ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Next to join us at The Studio Gallery is Paula Wiegmink, in residence from 15–19 September.

Paula’s work is full of colour, character and a wonderful sense of observation. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the beauty found in everyday moments, her paintings celebrate Australian birdlife, nature and familiar subjects through a distinctive and joyful lens.

Across five days, Paula will be spending time with us in the gallery, surrounded by her work and sharing more about the inspiration and process behind her practice.

DOUGLAS KIRSOP | ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Starting today at The Studio Gallery.

We’re delighted to welcome Douglas Kirsop to the gallery for three days as our first Artist in Residence this September.

Known for his evocative Australian landscapes, Douglas captures the distinctive light, colour and atmosphere of the places he encounters, translating a sense of place through considered colour, composition and expressive mark-making.

Douglas will be joining us in the gallery alongside a selection of his work - sharing his process, talking inspiration and giving visitors the opportunity to meet the artist behind the paintings.

This September, The Studio Gallery welcomes five of our highly renowned local artists into the gallery as ‘Artists in Residence’.

Across the period, Douglas Kirsop, Paula Wiegmink, Sue Eva, Jo Darvall and Lesley Meaney will each spend time at the gallery - surrounded by their work and sharing a little more of the process, inspiration and stories behind it.

An opportunity to meet the artists, discover their work in person, talk all things art and perhaps catch a glimpse of something currently taking shape in the studio.

FEATURING FIDO, MAN’S BEST FRIEND

We are excited to share the latest collection by Lesley Whitham, now on display at The Studio Gallery.

Playful at first glance, Lesley’s Fido works carry a beautifully familiar story of family, companionship and the small rituals that bind us together.

Continuing her Knitted Together series exploring familial bonds, Lesley introduces Fido - a dog of no particular breed, but one many of us will recognise. A constant companion, woven into the everyday fabric of family life through unwavering loyalty, trust and the simple joy of always being there.

The recurring thread of knitting holds another deeply personal connection for Lesley, drawn from childhood memories of her mother and grandmother and the familiar click-clack of knitting needles in the evenings - creating pieces, stitch by stitch, with love for their family.

As Lesley explains:

“This collection of work focusses mainly on Fido as part of the family. A continuation of my ‘Knitted Together’ series which explores familial bonds, Fido becomes knitted into everyday family life.

A dog of no particular breed, he is a constant companion with unwavering loyalty who brings a lot of joy to the home.”

Across paintings and hand-built ceramic sculpture, this latest collection captures that sentiment with all the warmth, character and gentle humour so distinctive of Lesley’s practice.

NEW TO THE GALLERY:
SUE EVA | GOLD PATTERNED BOWL

Quietly composed and beautifully restrained, Sue Eva’s Gold Patterned Bowl celebrates the character found in collected and everyday objects.

Three vessels sit against a softly neutral ground, with the intricacy and warmth of the central gold-patterned bowl becoming the natural focus. Subtle shifts in cream, stone and ochre, delicate shadows and considered detail give this intimate still life a wonderful sense of calm.

At 30 × 40 cm, it is a beautifully resolved smaller work - understated, warm and particularly lovely for an intimate space, or as part of a considered collection.

NEW WORKS AVAILABLE: Lesley Meaney | ‘Circumnavigating Uluru’s Quieter Side’

There is an extraordinary sense of movement in Lesley Meaney’s Circumnavigating Uluru’s Quieter Side - a landscape experienced not as a single view, but as something unfolding.

Layers of vivid colour, gestural mark-making and stitched canvas create a work alive with texture and rhythm; the burnt reds and pinks of the Australian interior meeting an unexpectedly luminous ground beneath.

At 125.5 cm wide, it is a beautifully proportioned statement piece - commanding enough to hold a space, while retaining the intimacy and intricacy that draws you closer.
