‘Meet The Artist Afternoon’ Please join us Friday 16th October between 1pm-3pm for the wonderful opportunity to meet our current featured guest artist Penelope Cato. Enjoy a glass of bubble and some nibbles while you view Penelope’s stunning work and chat about her intriguing process. Penelope Cato is an Australian contemporary artist based in Trentham, Victoria. Inspired by nature, pattern, and Japanese design, she creates layered mixed media works using traditional techniques. Educated in graphic and textile design, and formerly a lecturer in interior design, her practice reflects a lifelong engagement with visual culture.
This body of work responds to habitat restoration and land clearing near her home. Initially documenting the shock of a transformed landscape, the series evolved into an expression of renewal and ecological optimism. Using recovered timber and foliage, layered with ink, chalk pastel, shellac, and lead pencil, Cato embeds the landscape within each work. The recurring Bright-eyed Brown butterfly symbolises habitat regeneration, resilience, and the enduring capacity of nature to flourish.
