Por una cabeza is the famous Argentine tango, meaning "by a head". In horse racing, it describes a horse winning a race by no more than a head's length. This work replaces cabeza with cereza, head with cherry. In English, cherry carries associations of temptation, desire, first taste, and virginity. So this black horse is not racing to beat another horse. It is chasing its desire, just one cherry away.

Por una cabeza 是一首著名的阿根廷探戈，中文常译作《一步之遥》。但若从西语字面来看，por una cabeza 的意为“只差一个马头”。这个表达源自赛马，指一匹马仅以一个马头的微弱优势战胜对手。于是，“只差一个马头”也成为一种关于胜负、欲望与执着的隐喻。这件作品标题将 cabeza（头）替换成西语谐音词cereza（樱桃），因为在英语文化中，樱桃常与诱惑和欲望有关，黑马已经赢得了比赛，而它仍在追逐自己的欲望——那颗近在咫尺的樱桃。

A solo exhibition by Michelle van Eimeren

Please join our opening on Friday 20 November, 6–8 pm

We are thrilled to present Transmute, the second solo exhibition at C*D Gallery by our represented artist Michelle van Eimeren.

Since graduating from the National Art School in 2023, Michelle has exhibited in New Voices - NAS Emerging Group Exhibitions at C*D Gallery, before presenting her first solo exhibition with us in June 2025. This year, we presented her work at Sydney Contemporary, and we now look forward to celebrating her second solo exhibition this November.

Based in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Michelle works with botanical contact printing on silk, drawing colour and impressions directly from plants. Bringing plants into conversation with an Eastern sensibility, her works offer moments of quiet reflection and connection with the natural world.

We are honoured to welcome Monika Tu OAM, founder of Black Diamondz and art philanthropist to open our show.

We’re thrilled to see C*D Gallery represented artist Zi Xin featured in Ceramic Business District, presented by Brandx as part of Sydney Craft Week.

Her ceramic installation, "Dream Horse" curated by Wenxin Liu, brings childhood imagination and Chinese folk art to the streets of Sydney, inviting passers-by to pause, remember and dream.

Explore Sydney Craft Week from 9 to 18 October, and stop by Bathurst Street to discover Zi Xin’s dream-liked ceramic world.

Zi Xin’s debut solo exhibition, Words of Wisdom, is also currently on view at C*D Gallery until 22 October. We warmly invite you to visit both exhibitions and discover more of her imaginative world through clay.

We are thrilled to share that our represented artist Nicole Zhang’s The preparation (2024), acquired by the Art Gallery of Western Australia from her 2024 solo exhibition at C*D Gallery, is now on view in Attachment Styles.

Her debut solo exhibition, Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, was supported by Art Incubator, with Nicole selected as a 2024 grant recipient.

Based in Sydney, Nicole explores the emotional complexity of everyday life through figurative painting. In The preparation, figures come together to prepare a meal, yet each remains absorbed in their own task. The painting offers a quiet reflection on togetherness and individual worlds.

Zi Xin graduated from the National Art School in 2024 and further developed her ceramic practice through residencies in Sydney and Jingdezhen, China.

Drawing on Chinese folk art and her cross-cultural experience, she transforms Chinese, English and Spanish idioms into bold, playful ceramic forms. Inspired by lanterns, kites and fabric toys, her works give physical shape to language’s double meanings and ambiguities, exploring identity and perception through humour and memory.

Rooted in horse riding, this saying reminds us that falling is part of the journey. Anyone who has fallen from a horse knows the fear of getting back on. Yet fear cannot be allowed to hold the reins. We return to the saddle, gather our courage, and ride again.

A walk through Words of Wisdom, Zi Xin’s debut solo exhibition at C*D Gallery.

Zi Xin graduated from the National Art School in 2024 and further developed her ceramic practice in Jingdezhen. Drawing on idioms from Chinese, English and Spanish, she transforms everyday expressions into playful ceramic sculptures.

Inspired by Chinese folk art, lanterns, kites and fabric toys, her works bring together language, memory and the experience of moving between cultures. Through humour and wordplay, familiar sayings take on unexpected forms, inviting us to reconsider the expressions we use and the stories they carry.

Join Zi Xin in conversation with C*D Gallery Director Xiaoxiao Zhang on Saturday 10 October, 3–4 pm, to hear the ideas and stories behind the works.

We are thrilled to present C*D Gallery’s first European satellite exhibition, bringing represented artist Boris Toucas' solo show to Venice, Italy. Presented in collaboration with Serica Venice, Fragments of Eternity marks a new chapter in our journey with the artist.

A French artist and diplomat whose practice has deep connections with Australia, Toucas returned to drawing in 2023 after a twenty-year hiatus. Memories of Australia, a travel sketchbook and the inspiration of Albert Namatjira prompted this return. His first solo exhibition was presented by C*D Gallery in Sydney in 2024, followed by presentations at Sydney Contemporary in 2025 and Aotearoa Art Fair Auckland in 2026.

Working almost exclusively in blue ballpoint pen, Toucas builds intricate compositions through thousands of accumulated lines, without preparatory sketches or corrections. Fragments of Eternity explores drawing as an act of remembrance, preserving the emotional life of places and moments as they recede into memory. Architecture, landscapes and personal encounters come together in works that invite close, unhurried looking.

Some things are worth holding onto. Others are better left to roll right off your back. Zi Xin transforms the familiar English idiom into a playful ceramic form.

“Water off a duck’s back” describes the ability to let criticism or negativity pass without taking it to heart — hearing what is said, letting it go, and carrying on unaffected.

这句英文习语的字面意思是“水从鸭子的背上滑落”。因为鸭子的羽毛具有防水性，水很难停留，很快便会滑落。它也因此被用来形容面对批评、嘲讽或负面情绪时，不让这些声音影响自己——听过，便让它过去。

Mal Tiempo Buena Cara /Bad Weather Good Face (坏天气 好脸色), 2026

The Spanish saying Mal tiempo, buena cara literally means “bad weather, good face.” It reminds us to stay positive and face hardship with optimism. The English idiom It’s raining cats and dogs literally imagines cats and dogs falling from the sky, using absurd imagery to describe extremely heavy rain. If even cats and dogs are falling from the sky, you might as well smile and enjoy the rain.

西班牙语 Mal tiempo, buena cara，意思是“天气再坏，也要摆出好脸色”——提醒我们用乐观面对逆境。英语 It’s raining cats and dogs，字面是“猫猫狗狗下雨了”，用荒诞的想象来形容倾盆大雨。既然猫狗都下来了，那就笑着淋吧。

Today is the sixteenth day of the eighth lunar month. Yesterday, families gathered to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, sharing mooncakes and the joy of being together.

There is a Chinese saying: 十五的月亮十六圆 — The moon on the sixteenth is fuller than on the fifteenth. A reminder that things need not happen exactly when we expect them to. Sometimes, the best is still to come.

In Zi Xin’s ceramic work, this saying takes the form of a smiling pomegranate. Shíliú (石榴), meaning “pomegranate,” echoes shíliù (十六), meaning “sixteen.” Round and filled with seeds, the fruit is itself a symbol of abundance, fertility and the wish for a full and happy life. Through this playful exchange of words and forms, Zi Xin gives a familiar saying a new expression.

From all of us at C*D Gallery, we wish you a happy “Fuller Moon Day.”
