I’ll never skip this step! The monotone underpainting is crucial for establishing the value structure of your painting. Creating a solid foundation of lights and darks helps create depth and form on the flat canvas! I like to use it as a guide for my following layers, so i can focus on all the fun things like colour and detail, knowing I got the important foundational stuff down first ✅

Escapism is a feeling I strive to evoke in my garden paintings, which is why I really connected to this piece as I was creating it. In the new ‘It Ends With Us’ film, based on Colleen Hoover's bestseller, Lily Bloom opens her dream flower shop which becomes a sanctuary for her in the midst of hardship. is exclusively in cinemas August 8 Sony Pictures AUS

‘The rose garden, the way I remember it’˚. ༘ 🌹🫧 Well this one was an utter delight to work on!! I’ve named her ‘blush’ and basically, I wanted to capture these roses so they feel like a memory. You know sometimes when you look back on something wonderful and it rushes through your mind in a fragmented, dreamy way; there’s movement and stillness at the same time; and the colours are soo vivid and unreal… 🎞️💐💭 I loved loved loved painting her, which I know I already mentioned but that’s because I really did! Anyway, more on this piece to come. ‘BLUSH’ 24x36” oil on canvas, available soon!

My essential steps in creating a portrait commission 🤍 From the sketch, to the underpainting to the layers that follow. Over the last 11 years of creating portraits of beloved animals for people, I have really learnt the value in working from big to small, establishing all the important foundational elements before zoning in on the details. I hope you like this video ❤️

If you’ve seen my work before, you’ll know my art style does vary from painting to painting, but I’ve just finished this one and i can’t help but feel like it represents something I’ve been trying to achieve for a while now in my original work. I tried to really lean into the feeling I want to stir with my art, keeping my palette warm and colours slightly muted. I wanted everything to look dreamy and rose-kissed 🌹 Photos to come, so I can show you more detail!

There are two commons problems people ask me about when it comes to my underpainting process: 1. Their sketch smudged 2. Their paint absorbed too quickly while they’re working. ✅Making sure you prepare your surface properly before you begin is key to avoiding these common issues!
