Strathalbyn Heritage Museum

The Strathalbyn Heritage Museum, opened in July 1974 and is housed in the town's old police station (1858) & courthouse (1867).

A branch of the National Trust of South Australia. The Strathalbyn and District Heritage Centre is in the former police station (built 1858) and courthouse (added in 1867). Features include several rooms set out in the style of the Victorian era, a room reflecting changes in health care over the years, and a courtyard with very high stone walls. From the courtyard, one can access the three jail ce

lls. Displays in the recently refurbished courtroom focus upon the lives of the original inhabitants and upon the settlers who first came to the district. The Scottish influence is emphasised. In the yard is an extensive collection of farm machinery from the past, including an excellent example of a furphy, a blacksmith's shop, horse drawn vehicles and exhibits centering on the history of the local Emergency Services. Notable exhibits include an original horseworks (to view this in operation first expand the "Old working farm machinery" heading on the Video Tour page) and the world-beating high technology solar cycle, The Solar Flare. The Centre also holds a large collection of books, photographs and newspaper accounts of people and past events in Strathalbyn, most of which can be made available to researchers for a very reasonable fee. Alternatively, the research can be done for you by Centre staff - also at a very reasonable rate. The Centre welcomes groups, and guided tours are available.

What is a Furphy?

If you’ve ever heard someone say “That’s a furphy!” meaning a rumour or tall tale, it all began with these very water carts.

During the First World War, horse‑drawn water carts made by Furphy & Sons were used throughout Australian Army camps. Soldiers gathered around them to chat, swap stories, and pass the time, and soon the carts became famous as the birthplace of gossip, whispers, and wild yarns.
Our museum has one of the original Furphy water carts on display, complete with its iconic markings.

Meet Paul Foelsche — Strathalbyn's first police officer, pioneering photographer, and one of our town's most remarkable early residents.

Appointed as Strathalbyn's first police officer, Paul Foelsche was entrusted with maintaining law and order in a growing frontier town. From these very police cells, built in 1867, he carried out his duties with dedication, serving a community that relied on determination, trust, and resilience.

But Foelsche's legacy reaches far beyond policing.

While living in Strathalbyn, he developed a passion for photography, becoming one of South Australia's earliest photographers. His remarkable images of people, landscapes, and settlements have become an invaluable record of colonial life. He was also among the founding Freemasons of Strathalbyn, playing an important role in the social life of the young township.

Today, you can step inside the original 1867 police cells and explore our exhibition celebrating both his service and his extraordinary photographic legacy.

🎺 The Story of the Strathalbyn Brass Band

The Strathalbyn Heritage Museum holds thousands of historic photographs that preserve the people, places, and events that shaped our town. Every now and then, while researching our collection, we uncover a series of images that deserve to be shared.

These five restored and colourised photographs trace the history of the Strathalbyn Brass Band across the decades—from the band of 1886, through 1912, Peace Day in 1918, Anzac Day in 1929, and into its later years.

More than historic photographs, they are a glimpse into the people who gave our town its soundtrack. Their uniforms, instruments, and familiar faces remind us of a time when the community gathered for parades, celebrations, commemorations, and special occasions.

Every photograph in our collection is a window into Strathalbyn's story, helping preserve the memories of those who came before us for future generations.

Step into Strathalbyn's early days of law and order.

These two displays from our collection reveal the everyday tools used by local police more than a century ago. On display are heavy iron keys, hand-forged locks, handcuffs, truncheons, a muzzle-loading police firearm, and the shackles once used to restrain prisoners during transport.

Each object offers a fascinating glimpse into a time when policing relied on determination, resourcefulness, and the support of the local community. Together, they tell the story of how law and order were maintained, how the people of Strathalbyn were protected, and how our town grew into the community we know today.

Step back into the romance of a bygone era at the Strathalbyn Heritage Museum.
This elegant display brings together wedding gowns from 1920 to 1960 — four decades of changing style, fabric, and tradition. From the delicate lace and soft silhouettes of the 1920s, to the graceful lines and sparkling overlays of mid‑century fashion, each dress reflects the hopes and celebrations of a local bride on her wedding day.

These gowns show how love stayed constant even as fashion transformed — how every generation stitched its own personality into the moment two people stepped forward together.
