A quiet little corner of Kentish history 🤍

There’s something special about wandering through a museum with no particular agenda. Just taking your time, looking at the things that people used, made and treasured before us.

Pop in and have a look around. You never know what might catch your eye.

Behind every display is a great deal of work taking place behind the scenes.

In recent months, our volunteers have been carefully sorting, cataloguing and preserving the collection generously entrusted to the museum by the late local historian, Alan Dyer.

We feel incredibly privileged to care for such an important collection and are committed to preserving it for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated volunteers for the many hours they devote to preserving the history of the Kentish district.

Back in June, our Mystery Item in the Kentish Voice sparked this lovely response from one of our readers.

"The mystery object was a stereoscope. It came with a box of cardboard slides, each showing two slightly different images of the same scene. When viewed through the lenses, the two images appeared as a single three-dimensional picture.

The box of slides that came with the stereoscope our family owned contained images of the landscapes and residents of the Holy Land in the 1800s. It was one of my favourite toys when I was a child."

A big thank you to Ryan for recently assisting with some improvements around our museum.

Our museum building began life as the Sheffield Post Office, opening in September 1891. Built by G.N. Levy of Devonport at a cost of £750, it served as both the town’s post office and the Postmaster’s residence until 1965.

Over the years, the building was altered and extended, but in 1989 it found a new purpose as the permanent home of the Kentish Museum. To celebrate the building’s centenary in 1991, restoration work was undertaken to return it as closely as possible to its original appearance.

Today, more than 130 years after it was built, the building continues to serve the community, preserving the stories and history of the Kentish district.
