Welcome to the Sheffield Steam & Heritage Centre Inc page. Our society formed in 1993 to preserve our steam era heritage in a working environment and commenced with the construction of our 610mm (2’) gauge steam railway. At this stage the railway operates on the first weekend of every month, for two weeks following Christmas and for the week of MuralFest (Easter to the weekend following E

aster) and on other occasions by special arrangement. Trains leave the original Sheffield Railway Station which operates both as a station and a coffee shop on the half hour from 11am to 4pm. SteamFest – held on the March long weekend each year is our major fundraiser. 2015 saw us come of age with our 21st SteamFest and a record year it was with over 8000 visitors and 100 food stalls and 21 full size steam engines in steam for our 21st event! See https://www.facebook.com/pages/Steamfest-Tasmania/1380852358825665?fref=ts for our page for SteamFest. We ultimately plan to open the site 7 days a week so that more people can enjoy a step back in time on our site. The society relies heavily on voluntary support, sponsors and grants to progress site development and we are keen to hear from anyone who can help us with these aspects. Our committee meetings are the first Saturday of every month and every three months we hold a general meeting where all volunteers are encouraged to see what is happening within the organization and to contribute their ideas.

Winter is here! Why not come to Sheffield to visit the Steam & Heritage Centre and have a ride on the Redwater Creek Railway?

We will be running our historic steam train from 11am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, but not on Monday. That’s Sat June 6 and Sun June 7.

Here’s all the info you need:

Find us at the corner of Spring and Main St in Sheffield opposite the Claude Rd turnoff.

Train fares are adults $10, family (up to 6) $20, concession $8, kids under 5, companion card holders and dogs on lead travel free.

Miniature train rides cost $3 (subject to volunteer availability and the weather!) and the model railway exhibition is free.

Steam trains leave every half hour and the return journey takes about 25 minutes. There’s no need to book.

If it’s cold there is a log fire in the train station and coffee, hot chocolate and tea are served in the cafe. The platform and train are wheelchair accessible.

Sheffield is just 25 minutes south of Devonport so you can easily ride our train and visit the Don River Railway on the same day.

If you are in or travelling to the north of the state this weekend, why not visit the Redwater Creek Railway in Sheffield? Steam trains will be running both days May 2-3 from 11am to 4pm. The model railway exhibition will also be open.

During your visit, check out the progress our volunteers have been making on the restoration of the old Ida Bay Hunslet. This loco steamed for the first time this century earlier this year, although she won’t be hauling passenger trains just yet!

That task falls to our 120 year old Krauss loco, the only one still operating trains of the 51 that came to Australia in the decades prior to the First World War.

Here’s all the info you need:

If you are in the north of the state this Easter, why not visit the Redwater Creek Railway in Sheffield this weekend, April 4-5. Steam trains will be running both days from 11am to 4pm, and the miniature ride on railway will also be operating.

During your visit, check out the progress our volunteers have been making on the restoration of the old Ida Bay Hunslet. This loco steamed for the first time this century earlier this year, although she won’t be hauling passenger trains just yet!

Sheffield is just 25 minutes south of Devonport so real railway enthusiasts can easily ride our train and visit the Don River Railway on the same day. Also Wee Georgie Wood in Tullah is just 75 minutes away and running this Easter Saturday so why not visit all three heritage railways?!

The oats sheaves have now been cut and gathered, ready for our upcoming threshing display.
A huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers who have been out in the hot sun loading the sheaves onto utes and trailers. Your hard work and dedication keep these traditional displays alive for the community to enjoy.
We truly couldn’t do it without you — thank you for your time, effort, and commitment

Lots of work by many of our volunteers and friends has been underway in recent weeks to get us ready for Steamfest.

The oats have been cut and stocked, the fields around the Steamfest site have been slashed, dozens of sleepers along the track and in the yard have been replaced, firewood has been split, diesel driver competencies have been checked and assessed, extensive fencing work and painting is underway.

That’s just some of what’s happening and I don’t have photos of everything, but would appreciate it if you have photos of work you have been doing, if you would post them here!

Of course there is plenty more work to do, and if you can help let us know, but the Steamfest committee is confident we are on track for a very successful event.

Steam trains will be operating from Sheffield railway station this coming weekend February 7-8.

During your visit, check out the progress our volunteers have been making on the restoration of the old Ida Bay Hunslet. We hope to have this 1936-built loco in steam for Steamfest next month, although she won’t be hauling passenger trains just yet!

That task falls to our 120 year old Krauss loco, the only one still operating trains of the 51 that came to Australia in the decades prior to the First World War.

Finally, discounted tickets are now available online for entry into Steamfest from March 7-9. Save $5 per ticket if you buy online, and you can use your ticket on any one of the three days of this fabulous family fun event. Watch this space for updates too.

Great work yesterday by the trackwork team who replaced 21 sleepers from Dulverton to past the East Victoria St road crossing.

Thanks to Harry, John, Jon, Clare, Beck, Nick, Deb, Rachelle and James.

There’s still more to do and more volunteers always welcome!

After some pretty major work on the smoke box and and axle bearings over the past couple of years, the Fowler ventured out beyond the streets of Sheffield under her own steam for her first proper road run in quite a while. Daniel Landry and Chris Martin were supported by Peter Martin, John Harry and newcomer Bailey on the way from Sheffield to the Henley-on-Mersey, to be held tomorrow, Australia Day, at Bells Parade, Latrobe.

The Fowler is bedded down safely for the night and will be in steam tomorrow. Please support this local event, there’s woodchopping, ferret racing, fashion, great food, drinks for the adults, fun for the kids, animals, rides and so much more.

I’ve attached a video of the Fowler in Railton earlier today, and will add a few pix in and short videos in the comments, supplied by Daniel.
