Nature in thread | THE ART OF ANNEMIEKE MEIN

A wing becomes layered cloth. An insect’s fine structure becomes embroidery. A familiar leaf grows into a sculptural surface that seems ready to move beyond the frame.

Annemieke Mein OAM transforms close observation of Australian plants and wildlife into extraordinarily detailed textile art. Drawings and samplers reveal the careful thinking behind each finished work, while stitching, relief and layered materials give delicate natural forms a powerful physical presence.

Look closely for the creatures we often pass without noticing. Mein’s work asks us to slow down and rediscover the extraordinary detail already living around us.

John Leslie OBE helped shape Sale’s civic and cultural life, but his most enduring passion was the arts and the Gallery he helped establish in the early 1960s.

Join us for the launch of GENTLEMAN JOHN: THE LIFE OF JOHN LESLIE OBE, a comprehensive new biography by Gallery Director Simon Gregg. The book follows John’s childhood in Sale, wartime service, years in local government, love of travel and art, and the lasting contribution he made to his community.

For lovers of Gippsland history, biography and the arts, this is the story of one of the region’s most influential and beloved citizens. All profits from the publication go to Gippsland Art Gallery.

An Old Master | FIRST IMPRESSIONS: OLD MASTER PRINTS FROM THE COLLECTION

It sounds impossible, but this seventeenth-century work entered Gippsland Art Gallery in a rubbish bag.

Salvator Rosa was known as Italy’s rebellious “painter philosopher”, drawn to wild landscapes, dramatic figures and powerful contrasts of darkness and light. His c.1661 print ‘St Albert, the Companion of St William’ follows a solitary religious figure into a landscape charged with mystery and tension.

Centuries later, the work surfaced through the estate of Gippsland resident Alfred Andrews. Its unlikely journey brought it into the Gallery’s collection in 2014, turning a humble rubbish bag into one of the most memorable chapters in the collection’s story.

See the intricate lines, brooding shadows and extraordinary survival of this work in Gallery 3.

GALLERY WORKSHOP | ‘The Art of Nerikomi’ presented by David Pottinger

Calling all ceramicists! oin artist David Pottinger for ‘The Art of Nerikomi’ on 7 November, 10.30am to 3pm.

Discover the traditional Japanese technique of stacking, folding and slicing coloured clays to create intricate patterns within the clay itself. David will share his practice and demonstrate the process before participants experiment with the technique themselves.

Designed for adults aged 18+ with an intermediate knowledge of working with clay.

All materials, light refreshments, tea and coffee are supplied. Please bring your own lunch.

Artworks in conversation | CANVAS & CLAY

A painted mark meets a glazed surface. A curve on canvas reappears in the silhouette of a vessel. Light catches one artwork, then transforms the object beside it.

CANVAS & CLAY brings paintings and ceramics out of their usual categories and places them in direct conversation. The works were not made together, yet colour, texture, form and rhythm create connections that can feel deliberate, playful and sometimes completely unexpected.

Move around each pairing and the relationship shifts again. A painting can begin to feel physical, while clay can hold the atmosphere of a landscape or the energy of abstraction.

It can be a place remembered, a horizon transformed by weather, a fragile environment, an imagined terrain or something felt more deeply than it can be described. Across Gallery 1, 49 artists answer that question in completely different ways.

Selected from 577 entries nationwide, the 2026 JOHN LESLIE ART PRIZE brings together one of Australia’s most significant exhibitions of contemporary landscape painting. Familiar scenes sit beside abstracted views, intimate observations and works that challenge where landscape begins and ends.
