ARTIST INTRODUCTION
HOLLY WILSON ‘DO YOU LIKE ME’
Opening this Saturday 29.08
6pm - 8pm
My name is Holly Wilson. I’m an artist, musician, writer and the founding director of LEDA Gallery.
Before I began working in visual art, I was a musician. I later studied Fine Art, beginning in painting before finding myself drawn to philosophy, writing, performance and conceptual art. For the past five years, much of that creative energy has gone into building and curating LEDA.
It has now been seven years since my last exhibition.
This time, I’m returning to LEDA from the other side. As the artist.
My work is often read through the lens of feminism, and I value that reading. But feminism isn’t a framework I impose. The work begins simply with my own experience of being a woman in the world. A woman experiencing intimacy, desire, attachment, comparison, identity, rejection and our human need to be seen. I’m less interested in providing answers than I am in asking questions. Observation over prescribing meaning.
Influenced by artists and thinkers including Tracey Emin, Sophie Calle, John Berger and Roland Barthes, my practice now brings together photography, moving image, performance, philosophy and sound, alongside a musical language shaped by artists such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Björk, Sigur Rós and Beach House. I worked closely with my producer MZW to bring this to life.
After seven years, I don’t want to return to where I left off.
I want to make a world where the work exists.
Admittedly I am nervous and equally excited. I’ve spent the past five years creating this space for other incredible artists, so putting my own work into it feels exposing and daunting yet I’m beaming with inspiration to explore my creativity again.
DO YOU LIKE ME is the beginning of that world.
