Latrobe Regional Gallery A gallery for everyone. Free entry, open 10am-4pm daily. Workshops, events and kids programs. In the heart of Morwell on Gunaikurnai country.

Discover one of the largest public galleries in eastern Victoria, with seven gallery spaces and a changing exhibition program that offers a blend of unique local perspectives, curated exhibitions of note and artworks from our collection. Latrobe Regional Gallery is proudly owned and operated by Latrobe City Council with support from Creative Victoria. Palm Tree Love has been developed for its profound engagement with the ways communities remember, witness, and define place. At its centre lies the story of Morwell’s Twin Palm Trees - landmarks that stood quietly across generations, holding the shifting histories, industries, and identities of the town. Their endurance, and eventual loss, mirrors the resilience and transformation of Gippsland itself across time and place.

This exhibition brings together 11 Gippsland artists and key collection works to illuminate how landmarks, iconic (forgotten, or deeply personal) shape our understanding of belonging. It highlights the poetics of place, the politics of space, and the subtle ways memory is carried across time through land, infrastructure, and lived experience

Geo-luminescence is a material exploration of the capacity of slaked lime to echo its own origins in the deep sea, its uplift into the air to become mountainous, and its dissolution to form karst landscape above and below ground. Geo-luminescence is a material exploration by artist Sarah Tomasetti of the exchange of matter and light where water and sedimentary stone meet, where one becomes the other and plant and animal life grows.

Coral reefs form on submerged limestone and draw calcium carbonate from the sea. Tomasetti mixes calcium carbonate powder with pigment and lime putty, adding beeswax to render the lime translucent and reveal the unique patterning each pigment creates. Geo-luminescence is a sensory meditation on these exchanges as they occur interpreted through the material technology of fresco, a geological process based on the liveliness of limestone in all its forms.

Ukiyo-e: Responding to Tradition brings together Japanese woodblock prints from Latrobe Regional Gallery’s collection with a contemporary response by Japanese artist TWOONE.

TWOONE has spent time in Latrobe City and is weaving the local flora and fauna into his grand mural response to the collection. Known for working across painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, performance and public art, TWOONE’s practice is grounded in research, movement, place and community. His response extends the exhibition’s focus on image-making, memory and connection across time.

Palm Tree Love gathers 11 Gippsland artists, alongside works from the Latrobe Regional Gallery collection, each responding to the poetics, memories and interpersonal and inventive relationships formed around regional landmarks.
Across an array of sculpture, painting, text, photography, mural and sound the exhibition explores how these artists have witnessed and interpreted change across the Latrobe Valley, Gippsland and regional Australia. Each of the works imaginatively explores township and the vessels of a landmark’s identity and character. Some landmarks are iconic and widely known; others are niche, held only in generational memory or passed down through communal stories and limited texts.

At the centre of Palm Tree Love stands the story of the Twin Palm Trees of Morwell; a Morwell landmark composed of two iconic figures once rising proudly from the ridge above Morwell Butter Factory (circa 1890). Their silhouettes marking a place where industry, community and farm landscapes once intertwined. Furthermore, featured within works from the LRG collection – Bill Young’s Spirit of Morwell (1990), Colin Suggett’s Greetings from Electric Valley (1979) and Geoff Robinson’s Turn Right at the Palm Trees (2015).

The Latrobe Regional Gallery Shop is home to a beautiful range of work by Victorian artist and printmaker Bridget Farmer, whose love of birds shines through in everything she creates.

From original artworks and bird mobiles to greeting cards, pins, patches, books and games, Bridget’s work is all about helping people notice nature and celebrate the incredible wildlife right on our doorstep.

A passionate advocate for the conservation of Australia’s native birdlife, Bridget believes education and awareness are key to protecting the birds we share our environment with.

Whether you’re a dedicated bird nerd or simply love beautiful, nature inspired art, there’s plenty to discover in the Gallery Shop. 🐦🌿
