Our team has been busy behind the scenes installing the upcoming exhibition Sarah Tomasetti: Geo-luminescence and we’re starting to get a glimpse of what’s to come.

Strange Company

Curated by Alexandra Drummond, Collections Curator.

Galleries often showcase their most recognisable and conventional works, while many intriguing pieces remain in storage. Objects that resist easy categorisation, challenge aesthetic expectations, or simply sit outside familiar narratives remain unseen.

Strange Company brings together unusual, unseen and overlooked works from the LRG Collection. Some are playful, or experimental, others bold, excessive, or unsettling. Many push against traditional ideas of scale, material, subject or taste.

Rather than labelling these works as strange, the exhibition recognises the richness that exists beyond conventional definitions of beauty or importance. Seen together, these works keep strange company, revealing unexpected connections and reminding us that collections are shaped not only by what is displayed, but also by what remains unseen.

The Spring season opening event welcomes everyone to celebrate our new exhibitions and meet their local community. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet the artists presenting their work as well as local artists and arts supporters.

This Spring season, Japanese-Australian artist Twoone / Hiroyasu Tsuri will be starting a monumental mural in Gallery 4 during the season launch. You will be able to witness the artist at work while they create an immersive mural for the exhibition Ukiyo-e: Reinventing Tradition.

Guests are welcome to visit the exhibitions and enjoy refreshments in a lively and friendly setting.

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s free Education Program is available for primary, secondary, and tertiary groups Monday to Friday during exhibition seasons. Our learning resource kits are designed particularly to secondary learning levels years 7-12 and provide support toward both guided and self guided tours of the exhibition/s.

Japanese woodblock prints from the LRG Collection meet a bold contemporary response by TWOONE, tracing the enduring visual language of ukiyo-e from Edo Japan to today.

Robert Lee Davis presents an earnest and powerful exhibition that serves as a love letter to Gippsland, grounded in memory, place, time and driven by community-centred storytelling.

🏷️Catherine Bainbridge: Continuum

Gallery 6
Inspired by her upbringing in East Gippsland, Catherine's exhibition reflects on personal growth, place and identity through a powerful collection of works.

We will have an official opening on Saturday 19 September, so make sure you save the date and stay tuned to our social media.

Who is Catherine Bainbridge?

Catherine Bainbridge is an Australian artist whose work, over a long career, has been both figurative and abstract. She has exhibited six times with various concepts in drawing, painting, design and twice collaboratively with Daniel Keene (playwright), including once in film, exploring the interplay between script and image.

She spent a decade teaching in Melbourne schools and institutions in primary, secondary and tertiary education followed by forty years running her own teaching practice in the wider community teaching children, adolescents and adults. She has run studios for artists with intellectual disabilities and open workshops for artists grappling with mental health issues.

Catherine now divides her time between her studios in Richmond and East Gippsland, balancing her studio practice with mentoring emerging artists and supporting artists for whom the art world is challenging.

Catherine’s exhibition is on display in Gallery 6 until Sunday 29 November.
