🦩 A Great Display of Patience & Other Virtues

This print plays on the name of the flamingo species it shows, the Greater Flamingo, and on a real flamingo at Adelaide Zoo who was named “Greater.” 💗
A magpie and some cotton-top tamarins are jostling for attention on the flamingo’s back, and a little star finch watches it all from a cheeky perch on its head. 🐦🐒

On the tabletop below, a black-winged stilt and a lemur are eyeing each other off, caught up in their own drama and maybe about to tip the whole table over. 👀
There’s a pink “mobile phone” that might offer the flamingo a way out. But that’ll take patience too, because it’s balanced on the back of a slow-moving tortoise. 🐢📱

It’s a picture of life’s everyday juggling act: the domestic challenges, the constant balancing and the small virtues we show in the middle of chaos and the unexpected.

On now Kate Bergin at Blenheim Gallery

"I was recently speaking with a someone who mentioned one of their favourite paintings was by
Thomas Gainsborough. I wasn’t familiar it so I went straight to my Gainsborough books at home (I
know that speaks of my age, I didn’t race to the internet!) Flicking through one of the books I found
this beautiful small painting of his simply titled “Wooded Landscape with Pond”.

I was drawn to the fresh immediacy of the brush strokes and imaged him right there in that dark, stormy landscape. I thought it was the perfect painting to begin this small series of work for my first Tasmanian
exhibition at Blenheim gallery.

Then, I began to build the table top beneath choosing creatures and objects to reflect the tone and
colours within the Gainsborough. I also wanted them to reflect the almost quivering movement within the painting and so they all face in different directions, alert…anxious.

This awareness of imminent danger is also mirrored in the bakelite, film noir phone whose dial reads, “In Case of
Emergency Dial 170”.

By chance the creatures also represent the mainland states. The owl is from Downlands Zoo in Toowoomba, Queenlsand, I photographed the white rabbit in Albany, Western Australia, the brown rabbit is our pet here in Adelaide, South Australia while the tortoise was photographed at Taronga
Zoo, Sydney, New South Wales.

The 1940’s telephone was found at an antique store in Tyabb, Victoria.
Perhaps it’s the smallest creature in this painting, the canary, that will assuage our anxiety through
its inherent metaphor of early warning of danger or crisis. Or perhaps this restlessness within the urban landscapes of our cities, the untouched wilderness beyond and even the inner landscapes of our minds is something to embrace as part of the curious complexity that makes us who we are in this sometimes disturbing and ever-changing world that we live."

We’re delighted to welcome acclaimed Australian painter Kate Bergin to Tasmania for her first exhibition at Blenheim Gallery and Garden. In this captivating new series, animals, birds and curious objects gather in exquisitely rendered scenes that hover between order and delightful chaos—alive with movement, wit and possibility.

Join us for the exhibition opening on Saturday 10 October from 2 pm, with an artist talk at 3 pm. Meet Kate, experience the works in person and step into the wonderfully unexpected world of 'The Travelling Surrealist'.

“The Room of Monuments & Memories”, 2026, oil on canvas, 80 x 75 cm
I can’t help but be fascinated with the concept of a folly. Imagine building something completely
without purpose, simply to enjoy its architectural beauty. Apparently there is no precise definition of
a folly because of its ultimate subjectivity. Some explanations for a folly are a lack of good
judgement, foolishness & recklessness although a more gentle definition is also used…whimsical.
The idea that something could be built purely to engage a joyous response seems wonderful to me. I
might even go so far as to say that it is this thought that drives me as an artist to create. So here is my
little monument to a folly placed precariously on the table top as if it’s about to fall at any moment
suggesting that the weight of reality in our lives often overwhelms our sense of joy & wonder.
The rich visual imagery of Surrealism also gave us the elevation of the bowler hat via Rene Magritte. Here I’ve placed the bowler hat on the folly with a red apple on top pierced with spoons on either side. Perhaps it’s also a whisper to William S Burroughs & the tragic shooting of his wife Joan Elmer when he attempted to shoot an apple off her head, his “William Tell Trick”. Once again an image of something ordinary, the red apple, being placed in a non-ordinary situation questioning our presumptions & expectations.
The two finches also defy expectations by holding spoons suspended on strings, perhaps an act of
folly on both their parts. Perhaps our lives are simply a collection of follies that we think of as
monuments & memories. As Francois de la Rochefoucauld once wrote…
“He who lives without folly is not as wise as he thinks”. Here’s to all our follies, memories & dreams…KX🍎❤️

Beautiful landscape paintings with Brooke van Ruiswyk and Alison Aplin at Blenheim Gallery.

Today featuring two of Brooke's works which stand out and in contrast on is 15cm square and the other 50 cm square. The small have just as much presence.

Brooke has generational family history in Tasmania. An award winning visual artist
based in Northern Tasmania her evocative paintings explore the moody, solitary atmosphere of her farming background on Tasmania's northwest coast.

This show brings successfully to the public all those memories and elements that capture wet pastures rolling mist and stormy skies.
