🚂 A little piece of Kyogle railway history – September 1978! 🎟️

Back in the day, imagine the excitement of a young family catching a passenger train from Kyogle to Brisbane ~ the big smoke !

Ticket in hand, arriving at the station, settling in for the journey north ~ a wonderful part of regional life that holds special memories for many.

These September 1978 railway tickets are a lovely snapshot of our past, a reminder of the important role passenger railway played in connecting Kyogle with other communities.

📣 Help us celebrate our railway heritage!

With 2030 marking the Centenary of the railway line’s construction between Kyogle and Brisbane, we’re keen to hear from anyone who has railway memorabilia, old tickets, photographs, timetables, stories or other keepsakes they would be willing to share as we look towards this important milestone.

Now this is historical gold ~ 🚂

John Young recently donated his fathers Reg, extraordinary photos of the early construction of the Kyogle to Brisbane Railway line from 1927.

Mr Reg Young was employed with NSWGR from 1918 to 1967 completing his career as Staff Superintendent of the ‘Ways and Works Branch’.

In 1927 Reg was sent to Kyogle to report on progress of the railway line construction ~ his photographs speak of sheer hard work, pick and shovel technology.

These incredibly rare historical pics provide an insight into a nation building project ~ linking NSW and Queensland by single gauge steel !

💯 With the Railway Centenary looming in 2030 ~ what other nuggets of historic railway gold might be out there ???

Just short of sixty seven years Rex Page applied his trade ~ a barber, a hair dresser, a friend to so many. 💈💇‍♂️

For a young client a childhood haircut by Rex wasn’t complete without a yummy lolly or two 🍭🍬

Along with a sharp haircut back in the day You could even buy a pack of am******on or some fishing gear, such was the good old fashion country service !

Born in Grafton in 1924, Rex came to Kyogle in 1934 working as an apprentice for barber Bernie Jenkins.

Enlisting with the RAAF, Rex served with honour returning to Kyogle in 1946 purchasing his own barber business.

Over the ensuing years Rex performed countless hair cuts ~ did he cut your hair ??

Aged 89 years young Rex finally hung up the scissors in 2013 ✂️

Gifted by son David, we now have on display Rex’s barber 80 yr old chair ~ a true piece of Kyogle’s history 💈

Big shout out to Rob Carr @ Roseberry Creek Developments for responding so quickly to a break and entry at the Old IGA Shop Window.

Through the Kyogle and District Chamber of Commerce we really appreciate the opportunity to display our wares, showcasing our beautiful little town in such a prime location.

Its therefore SO disappointing that community groups like ours was subject to such a blatant act of vandalism !

With a couple of break ins around town ~ if you seen anything suspicious report it to the Police on 131444

Big shout out to Allan from No Bull Vintage and Collectables for graciously donating a ‘Horseshoe Creek Hall’ sign which recently came into his vintage shop. 🙏

History tells us that the 1946 Horseshoe Creek Hall was demolished by Kyogle Council in September 2017.

Council in its wisdom back in the day ~ decided to raze the neglected building because it had fallen into a state of disrepair ~ maintenance costs outweighing the money raised through hire fees.

With a demolition order in place the community rallied with a Last Hurrah ~ local band Howlin' Yowies held a final farewell party at the hall in March 2017.

The World War I and II honour rolls from the hall were relocated to the Kyogle Memorial Institute

Parts of the timber and structure from Horseshoe Creek Hall and Cedar Point Hall were salvaged to help build Kyogle Museum
