There are only a few weeks remaining to experience 'Made in Australia', the bold retrospective by acclaimed artist Ross Tamlin! Make it part of your weekend plan!

Currently showing at Roxy Gallery until Sunday 13 September, Made in Australia offers visitors the opportunity to explore three decades of Ross Tamlin’s work.

Based in Kyogle since 2003, Ross Tamlin has quietly established an international reputation for his distinctive paintings, which blend surreal and super-real elements of Australian iconography, and his depictions of signage and weathered corrugated iron. Ross has sold more than 1000 paintings (with around 600 of those finding homes overseas) and held 18 previous solo exhibitions, with his work shown at international art fairs in New York, Sydney and London. Don’t miss your chance to visit in the final weeks.

Roxy Gallery is located upstairs at 131 Summerland Way, Kyogle, and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 3pm and Sunday from 10am to 1pm. Group and school visits can also be arranged.

TOMORROW! Join us for the first event in our new 'In Conversation With' series at the Roxy Gallery.

We’re delighted to welcome current exhibiting artist Ross Tamlin for a casual evening conversation about his retrospective exhibition, 'Made in Australia', and his 30-year career as a professional artist.

Over the course of his career, Ross has sold more than 1,000 paintings, with around 600 finding homes overseas. During the conversation, Ross will share stories from his creative journey and some of his knowledge and experience of international gallery representation, offering valuable insights for local artists and creatives.

It’s also a wonderful opportunity for those who can’t usually visit the gallery during regular opening hours to experience the exhibition in the evening.

Kyogle Council's first Creative Conversation in Kyogle brought together over 20 community members, artists and representatives from local arts groups to share ideas about the future of arts and culture across the LGA.
The conversations explored ways to encourage people of all ages and abilities to engage with the arts, support local artists to develop their practice, and use arts and culture to create sustainable tourism opportunities.
Thank you to everyone who shared their passion, ideas and experiences. Your inputs are helping us shape how we support artists and the creative industries, as well as Gallery programming into the future.

The Roxy Gallery is proud to support upcoming exhibitor Jodie Harris from 6 Acre Studios in her 'Dear Survivor" project...

'Dear Survivor' is a companion project to Jodie's 'Salt: Bearing Witness" exhibition which will feature here from 14th November.

The Gallery is home to a red box, where anonymous words of support and kindness can be left for survivors of domestic violence. read more in this article from The Indy

The story behind the painting...

What does a bushfire leave behind? And how can that be turned into both art, and message?

Painted in late 2019 during the devastating Black Summer bushfires, 'Mills of God Grin Exceeding Slow' by Ross Tamlin is a deeply personal work. He had seen fires before, including the devastating '94 fires while living in Sydney — but these 'Black Summer' fires were the worst he had experienced.

Ross saw the devastation firsthand as a volunteer RFS firefighter of 15 years. He remembers the grey ash covered the fire grounds and streams that had stopped running. Road signs had been burnt and melted, leaving behind only fragments of colour. Those fragments found their way into the painting.

'Mills of God' was painted over one of Ross's earlier text-based works. Words and colours from the painting underneath still emerge through the grey, hinting at traces of what was there before.

For Ross, the work is also a statement about climate change and our responsibility to care for the land. Ross's maternal Māori heritage and his connection to the land have shaped that sense of responsibility from childhood.

In 'Mills of God', all of these things come together: fire, land, memory, and responsibility... and an urge to look closer.

'Mills of God' is part of MADE IN AUSTRALIA: A Retrospective of Ross Tamlin, on exhibition at Roxy Gallery, Kyogle until 13 September 2026. Entry is free and all are welcome.
