Furniture should feel good to use.
That sounds simple, but designing something that genuinely works with the human body takes a lot of thought.
In 'Works in Wood', Garan Hale explores the relationship between timber, design and the human form, creating furniture that isn't just about how it looks, but how it feels to sit, rest and interact with it.
There is something lovely about seeing furniture in a gallery that is actually made to be used. These are pieces that invite you to look closely at the craftsmanship, but also to think about the relationship between our bodies and the things we surround ourselves with. And yes, some of the furniture is there to be sat on.
So take your time. Look closely. Notice the details.

If you're a lover of timber and woodworking, you'll want to spend some time with this exhibition.

Garan Hale's 'Works in Wood' is a beautiful opportunity to slow down and really look at timber. The grain, the colour, the texture, the character and all the little things that make one piece of wood different from another.

Garan has even created a display of different local timbers, so you can test your knowledge and brush up on your timber identification skills while you're here.

And then there is the furniture itself. Beautifully crafted pieces that celebrate the timber they've been made from rather than trying to hide what makes each piece unique.

If woodwork and timber are your thing, we think you'll find plenty to keep you interested.

Join us at the Roxy Gallery for the second in our 'In Conversations With...' series, as current exhibitor Garan Hale, speaks with Brendan Lafferty, President of the Border Ranges Woodcrafters.

Garan will share the story behind his exhibition 'Works in Wood', his passion for working with salvaged Australian timbers, and the journey that has shaped his practice.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear more about Garan’s work, explore the exhibition after hours, and enjoy a relaxed conversation about wood, craftsmanship, creativity and the stories held within the materials.

What is Garan Hale's 'Works in Wood' all about?

ARTIST STATEMENT: "Works in Wood brings together a collection of works that reflect my commitment to circular, ethical craftsmanship. Using salvaged Australian timbers, I design and build furniture that is both enduring and comfortable to the human body.
My process begins in the forest and on riverbanks, in flood and storm-fallen trees. Trees shaped by years of growth, weather and chance. Every piece I create carries this history of a past life I believe worthy of honouring and preserving.
Traditional wooden joints replace metal fixings. Curved laminations, dovetail cleats, and through‑morticed joints are not only structural choices - they reveal how a piece is held together and why it endures over time.
This is the responsibility I feel I hold as a maker, and so I invite people toward a more considered way of living.
This body of work is an invitation to pause, to sit, and to feel the texture and grain of timber that has been given a second life".

MEET THE ARTIST: GARAN HALE

With over 45 years of experience, Garan has established himself as a truly skilful woodworker. His expertise extends across a diverse range of woodworking disciplines beginning in the world of guitar making and fine furniture. There he developed a precise attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

Over the years, Garan has honed his skills in other woodworking realms, including legal, library and professional office cabinetry, luxury boat fit outs and antique restoration and reproduction.

Furthermore, he has built hardwood homes and supplied architectural joinery for luxury homes throughout Northern NSW.

With environmental responsibility a priority, Garan mills and solar kiln dries ethically sourced and fallen logs. Also passionate about the regeneration of native tree species, he is actively involved in the replanting of cabinet timbers, ensuring the survival of Australian rare and endemic timbers.
