Museums and Galleries Queensland promotes, supports and provides services to foster excellence in museums, galleries and keeping places. The Company strives to ensure a future where museums, galleries and keeping places are relevant, accessible and valued by their communities. The organisation achieves this by providing a range of programs and services in the areas of information and advice; train

ing and professional development; and exhibition development and touring, and by promoting the achievements of Queensland galleries and museums through activities that profile and recognise their activities. M&G QLD strongly urges Queensland’s public museums and galleries to complete our sector survey to inform our benchmarking, advocacy, and public awareness campaigns over the next year!

M&G QLD has made submissions to the review of National Cultural Policy and Queensland’s Time to Shine, but we need strong sector data to back up these submissions and to demonstrate the true impact, value and scale of Queensland’s museums and galleries.

Our thanks to the 47 organisations who have completed the survey, but we need to hear from the remaining 350+ organisations in Queensland!

Help improve the visibility of our sector! Data being collected is for the 2025 financial or calendar year. All responses are confidential and will be aggregated.

Now on display at the QANTAS Founders Museum in Longreach, 'The Brothers Gruchy' showcases the incredible works of acclaimed Australian artists Tim and Mic Gruchy, whose collaborative practice has been pushing creative boundaries since the 1980s.

Featuring immersive new media artworks, powerful video installations and thought-provoking explorations of human perception, artificial intelligence, memory, cultural identity and our relationship with the natural world, this nationally touring exhibition offers a truly unique experience.

'The Brothers Gruchy' brings together key works from two of Australia's most innovative digital artists, inviting audiences to reflect on our rapidly changing world through a lens of creativity, technology and wonder.

M&G QLD is pleased to share an exciting professional development opportunity for regional Queensland museum and gallery staff and volunteers.

The University of Queensland Art Museum (UQAM) is offering travel bursaries of up to $1,000 to support attendance at the Two-way Conversations in the Art Museum: Introduction to Cultural Mediation workshop, to be held at Rockhampton Museum of Art on 15-16 October 2026.

This two-day workshop provides a rare opportunity to learn directly from UQAM's educators, who are recognised nationally as leaders in the specialist field of cultural mediation. Their expertise includes partnering with Creative Australia to train staff for the Australia Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.

To help regional Queensland participants attend, UQAM is offering travel bursaries of up to $1,000, administered by M&G QLD.

We encourage eligible regional Queensland museum and gallery professionals and volunteers to apply and take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

Applications close at 5:00pm, Wednesday 26 August 2026.

The two-day Introduction to Cultural Mediation Workshop is an initiative of The University of Queensland Art Museum delivered in partnership with Museums & Galleries Queensland and Rockhampton Museum of Art.

Travel bursaries are made possible through the Kinnane Bequest, generously made by Paula and Tony Kinnane to The University of Queensland in 2016 to support training and education in the arts.

‘Billy Missi’n Wakain Thamai’ opens this Saturday 8 August at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery, WA!

🎉 Launch Event: Saturday 15 August, from 5pm

‘Billy Missi’n Wakain Thamai’ brings together over fifty of the artist’s most significant and iconic prints, including rare and never-before-exhibited monoprints, etchings, and linoprints from Djumbunji Fine Art Press and private collections. Curated by Dr Russell Milledge, this retrospective was developed in close consultation with the Billy Missi Estate, family members and friends, highlighting Missi’s critical role in the emergence of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) printmaking as a contemporary art form.

‘Billy Missi'n Wakain Thamai’ is an exhibition developed by NorthSite Contemporary Arts (Gimuy/Cairns) and touring Australia in partnership with Gab Titui Cultural Centre/Torres Strait Regional Authority (Waiben/Thursday Island) and Museums & Galleries Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government's Visions of Australia program.

A wonderful two days in Atherton! 💜💜

Following on from two great days in Cairns, our team are now in Atherton, where they have been joined by members of the local museum and gallery community taking part in our First Nations and Contemporary Collecting Workshop with Olivia Robinson, and the Disaster Preparedness Workshop with Christine Ianna.

These valuable skills development workshops are supported by the Australian Government through the Community Heritage Grants Program, and are part of our ongoing commitment to supporting collecting organisations across Queensland.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Cairns and Atherton this week and helped make the workshops such a success!

These workshops are funded by the Community Heritage Grants (CHG), which is an Australian Government partnership between the Office for the Arts; and four national collecting institutions – the National Archives of Australia; the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia; the National Museum of Australia and the National Library of Australia (who manages the program on behalf of the partners).

✨ Far North Queensland workshop series underway!

This week, our Training & Professional Development Officer, Madeleine Green, and Information Officer, Ben O'Dwyer, are in Far North Queensland alongside industry specialists Olivia Robinson and Christine Ianna, delivering skills workshops supported by the Australian Government through the Community Heritage Grants Program.

These photos were taken at Cairns Art Gallery, where Olivia Robinson, a proud Bidjara woman, presented the First Nations and Contemporary Collecting Workshop on Tuesday, while Christine Ianna delivered a Disaster Preparedness Workshop on Wednesday, for participants from across the region.

Today and tomorrow, the team is in Atherton, delivering the same workshops to members of the community's museum and gallery sector, helping to build knowledge, strengthen collections practice, and support the preservation of our shared heritage.

These workshops are funded by the Community Heritage Grants (CHG), which is an Australian Government partnership between the Office for the Arts; and four national collecting institutions – the National Archives of Australia; the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia; the National Museum of Australia and the National Library of Australia (who manages the program on behalf of the partners).

📦🚚 Wrapping up another successful national tour!

This week, our Exhibitions Coordinator, Andrea Higgins, has been hard at work condition reporting and carefully packing up another of our major exhibitions, having reached the conclusion of its national tour.

Andrea is currently in Bundaberg, working alongside the fabulous team at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery as we farewell 'Lost in Palm Springs', the sophisticated and thought-provoking exhibition curated by Dr Greer Honeywill.

It has been a pleasure to share this remarkable exhibition with audiences across the country, and we extend our sincere thanks to all the artists, designers, thinkers and project partners who contributed to bringing this project to life.

A special thank you also goes to Bundaberg Regional Galleries Director Rebecca McDuff and her team for their warm welcome and generous hospitality while hosting Andrea this week.

👏 Thank you to everyone involved in making the tour of 'Lost in Palm Springs' such a success.
