The Gulgong Holtermann Museum is set in two 1870s gold rush buildings now state heritage listed. This educational and tourist facility is based on the renowned UNESCO listed Holtermann Collection of photographs taken during the town's 'roaring' days in the 1870's. The contemporary design of this showcases the black and white photographs digitised, enlarged and mounted o walls through the museum. V

isitors also have access to all photographs on touchscreen throughout the facility. Touchscreen activities for young and old engage visitors in the unique gold rush history in the form of puzzles, animated games and photographic enlargement. The newest feature of the Museum is the narrated interactive street trail. This trails takes the Gulgong Holtermann Collection photographs onto the streets of Gulgong, a first for our region and we and look forward to sharing it with locals and visitors.

significant group of 3500 photographic glass plates held at the Mitchell Library - State Library of NSW, taken between 1870-1875.

"Australia 1872" Discover how Bernard Holtermann turned gold into a unique photographic treasure.

Holtermann emigrated from Hamburg to Australia as a destitute young man, where in 1872, he unearthed the largest lump of gold in the world. As he travelled through towns he documented life in these towns in spectacular images.

Gulgong was first photographed at the end of April 1872 & Beaufoy Merlin's assistant Charles Bayliss, made trips to the alluvial goldfields of Home Rule & Canadian Lead in July 1872, before returning to Gulgong.

Merlin re-photographed Hill End & it's residents, including Bernard Holtermann standing outside his house. When the world's largest specimen of reef gold, weighing 286kg was unearthed from the Holtermann Star of Hope mine on 19 October 1872, Merlin & Bayliss were able to photograph it above ground, before it was crushed!

Discover Chris Dingle's acclaimed colourisation work, bringing nineteenth-century faces & streetscapes vividly to life for modern audiences.

His extraordinary exhibition "Faces in the Crowd 1872" Exhibtion is far more than a collection of beautifully colourised photographs, it's an invitation to look beyond the image & discover their lives, families & stories behind every face. Perhaps that is Chris' greatest gift.....he helps us see what others might simply walk past!
