20,000 VISITORS!

Meet Wendy, and her husband Peter Hartley. Wendy is the 20,000th visitor to the museum since June 2022, and the proud winner of one of our beautiful fridge magnets (usually $5). Wendy and Peter are visiting from Plymouth, England, and catching up with family members in Eumundi.

We are immensely proud of reaching this milestone in less than four years since reopening after our major renovations. Thank you to everyone who has visited us, especially to those who have been in more than once.

On this International Women's Week Eumundi Museum shines a light on one of the many forgotten women of history. This is a photo of Eleanor Trundle, from one of the earliest Eumundi families.. Eleanor, her sister Maud and her mother Charlotte were amazing women dedicated to empowering women before the word 'suffrage' was in use. The Eumundi museum has reincarnated them in print (A history of Eumundi Vol.1 1873-1919) and recorded their details more extensively in our archives that we are always happy to share. FREE ADMISSION Open Tues - Sat 10.00-3.00

Look at these wonderful new additions to our collection, donated by Betty Petrie. They aren’t on display yet, sorry. We’ll work on an appropriate exhibition after our upcoming renovations are completed.

If you have anything stored away that you think the museum might like, please come in and have a chat or email us [email protected]

Do you love books? Do you love libraries? Do you love books about libraries!?

Noosa Libraries: The First 50 Years: 1973-2023 was eventually launched yesterday at the Noosaville library.

Co-authored by our museum’s Joe Hextall and former Noosa Heritage Coordinator, Jane Harding, it is a fascinating, enjoyable (if rather niche) read.

It is available through Noosa Libraries, of course, and can also be viewed online:

HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK.
First bus to Cooroy with a group of students
The Cooroy campus of Noosa District State High School opened in 1963. Presumably this is when the first bus operated from Eumundi.

A history of January 26th in Australia.

It was only in 1915 that Australia Day emerged, as a fundraising effort for the first world war. Held on July 30, the first Australia Day was directly shaped by the experience of the Gallipoli landing. It continued to be held in July for the remainder of the war.
By 1935, the states all agreed to use the name Australia Day and celebrate it on January 26. But it was a decision that caused controversy and protest. The 150th anniversary in 1938 was celebrated nationally but also saw First Nations declare the date to be a “day of mourning”.

As part of our current exhibition, MAPS, we have asked visitors to place stickers on maps of the world, Australia, Queensland, and the greater Sunshine Coast, to show us where they have come from. Um..... it seems unlikely that visitors have come from the Antarctic, or North Korea, or Venezuela. But it is possible. It has been an interesting element of the exhibition nonetheless.

Our MAPS exhibition is a great introduction to the history of mapping and surveying. Entry is free, as always. Maps is on display at Eumundi Museum until 28th March.
