Come along to our site at Don Village on Forth Road, Devonport and see the display of steam and diesel engines and other rolling stock that has played an important part in Tasmania's rail history. Look through our museum of historical railway artifacts and photos. Enjoy a half hour ride on a genuine vintage train along the old Melrose line to Coles Beach and back. Whilst you're there, take some time to inspect our extensive workshop and site display.

We’re ready to roll for another great week of train rides at Don River Railway! Trains are running Thursday to Sunday, 10am–2pm.

If you’re joining us for the Dachshund train ride on Sunday at 11am with Dachshund's of Bernie, tickets are selling fast, so please pre‑book online at the link below to secure your spot. Everyone is welcome. You don’t need to bring a Dachshund to join this ride!

Bring your four‑legged friend for a fun day out on the rails.

Dachshunds of Burnie will be meeting at 10:30am on 21 June for the 11am train, and all Dachshunds — plus their humans — are welcome aboard. 🐶

Dogs of all shapes and sizes are always welcome at Don River Railway. They’re part of the family, and part of the fun.

Our volunteer team at the Inveresk Workshops in Launceston is hard at work restoring one of Tasmania’s true railway treasures — Carriage B2, built in 1869 in Birmingham England for the Tasmanian Railways.

This carriage has carried generations of Tasmanians, and thanks to the dedication, skill, and passion of our volunteers, it’s now being carefully brought back to life.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, now is the perfect time. Whether you’re handy with tools, love history, enjoy working with people, or simply want to be part of something meaningful - we’d love to welcome you to the team.

There's nothing like the sound of our diesel Y6 waking up the valley. The rumble, the shake, the first burst of power… it means we’re getting ready to roll for another big week.

We’re open for train rides this Thurs – Sun, 10am - 2pm. Come down, explore the site, and enjoy a run along the river.

And if you’re planning a big weekend of steam and diesel: Sheffield Steam & Heritage Centre is just 25 minutes south of Devonport, so you can easily visit us at Don River and ride their train on the same day this Sat & Sun. Double the trains, double the fun.

BEYOND CITY PARK: "HUTCH" ARRIVEBEYOND CITY PARK: "HUTCH" ARRIVES AT DON! 🏗️🚂

Today marks a massive milestone for the Don River Railway. After 36 years as a familiar face in Launceston’s City Park, locomotive U3 has been successfully lifted and relocated to its new home here in Don!

A MAMMOTH TEAM EFFORT
A job this size takes a village. A huge thank you to our lead volunteers, Andrew Skinner (DRR Board Councillor) and John Myers, who spent countless hours on prep and logistics. We are also incredibly grateful to every volunteer who helped on-site, and to Clynton Brown for his generous donation of his water pump containing the remains of sister locomotive U4, whose engine will be used in the long term restoration of U3.
