Our locomotive U6 waits patiently at Don Station on a cold Tasmanian morning. 🌤️

The winter light settles over the yard as our volunteers move through their morning checks, getting everything ready for another day on the line.

We’re open and running trainsThursday to Sunday, 10am–2pm. It might be chilly, but it’s a beautiful time to ride the railway and see it come to life.

Our volunteers at our Inveresk Workshop have carried out a painstaking top to bottom restoration of First Class Carriage AAL 11.

Built for the Tasmanian Railways in the 1930’s these carriages were the pinnacle of first class travel at the time - with plush seating, ornate timberwork and interiors.

AAL 11 has now been restored from top to bottom, with a rebuilt roof, re-upholstered seating, and restored timberwork throughout. Every detail showcases the skill and patience of our volunteer team who have been working on this multi-year restoration.

AAL 11 is now awaiting its return to Don River Railway, ready to showcase the golden age of Tasmanian rail travel once again.

🚦 What does a train driver see when you approach a railway crossing?

For Rail Safety Week, we’re handing the mic to one of our very own volunteers — Andrew Skinner.

Andrew knows railways from both sides of the crossing. He’s a Supervising Driver with TasRail and, when he’s not driving trains, you’ll find him volunteering at Don River Railway.

In this video, Andrew gives us a driver’s-eye perspective on level crossing safety — and explains why those few seconds you take to STOP, LOOK and LISTEN can make such a difference.

Travel aboard our heritage train from Don River Railway to Coles Beach and return. Dress in pink and help turn the railway into a sea of colour in support of breast cancer awareness.

A portion of every ticket sold supports the incredible work of Penguin in Pink.

Penguin in Pink, founded in 2018 by Shirly Good and a dedicated volunteer team, has raised over $160,000 for cancer warriors and local projects across the North West Coast.

Inside the cab, the levers, gauges remind us of a simpler time when nothing was digital, nothing automated.

Outside you’ll find couplings connected by hand, hoses locked in place, and our volunteers making sure every train is safe and ready for each service.

Whether it’s our classic train waiting for departure or a quiet moment at the station, these scenes capture the charm of what you will find at Don River Railway.
