Then came an exhibition of b**r can art we called ‘Chainsaw L***r’ … just for fun. Then came the question … “When are you putting the b**r in a can?” … So we did …

BRUNY ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL | biff 2026

Four days of film, filmmaking and conversation come to Bruny Island, lutruwita/Tasmania, 22–25 October 2026.

BIFF is a small festival with a big focus on the people behind the screen -Tasmanian filmmakers, new Australian work, analogue film, experimentation and honest conversations about making cinema.

Friday night is all about Tasmanian shorts , with five new works and conversations with the filmmakers behind them:

Katie Robertson - We Don’t Have Long Alex Laird - The Unbearable Weight Bailey Jackson - Anomalous Alex Machin - Definitely Rebecca Thomson - A Green Affair

Alongside the Tasmanian program, biff welcomes acclaimed Australian director Justin Kurzel for The Order and a conversation about filmmaking.

The weekend also includes a hands-on 16mm filmmaking workshop with Ursula Woods, Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie, breakfast with screenwriter Stephen Abbott, an analogue film screening, and opening night Slide Night.

At bruny NORTH, we are lucky enough to do all our favourite things.

Sometimes that means exhibitions, sometimes producing a b**r, sometimes holding workshops, a festival, or a summer shop full of work by artists and makers from the Island.

It’s really about following our joy, bringing people together and spending time with things that are worth it.

Which brings us to Stella Robertson.

If you’ve met Stella or seen her work, you’ll know that her workmanship is dazzling and precise. We think it could comfortably sit alongside any great collections in textile museums around the globe.

On Thursday 8 October, Stella is joining us for a day of slow stitching.

Slow stitching is less about finishing something and more about taking the time to make. Stella will guide you through a gentle day of stitching, suitable for all ages and levels of experience, including complete beginners.

All materials are provided, including hand eco-printed base fabric, vintage wooden spool, assorted fabrics, lace, buttons, needles, thread and scissors. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon cheese and wine/drinks are also provided.

Australian director Justin Kurzel joins BIFF for a screening of The Order, followed by a conversation about the making of the film and his approach to filmmaking.

The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett and Marc Maron. The historical thriller is based on the true story of an FBI investigation into a violent white supremacist organisation planning an armed uprising in the United States.
