Listening To The Land // MEET OUR ARTISTS | Georgina Hutchinson
Born in Cairns and raised across Papua New Guinea and Malaysia, Georgina Hutchinson (centre) has long been drawn to the beauty, complexity and interconnectedness of the natural world. After studying Visual Arts at Queensland University of Technology and working across arts retail, museums and administration, she eventually returned to her own practice - exploring acrylic, ink, linen, paper and found objects to elevate the ordinary and find beauty in what has been discarded.
In her latest exhibition, 'Nature’s Dialogue – Shifting Views', Georgina’s slow art practice is deeply rooted in observing and responding to the environment around her. Scorched Escarpment – Nature’s Fire Diary reflects on the fragile resilience of the Australian bush, using torn and burnt paper, ash, dirt and charred materials to explore fire’s dual role as both destruction and regeneration.
Walking through fire-damaged landscapes, documenting what she sees through photography and sketches, Georgina allows the materials themselves to shape the work. Her process becomes a form of listening - a way of responding to the land’s shifting voice and contemplating impermanence, change and the quiet intelligence of nature.
