Dora Mbitjana Painting Australian Aboriginal Art
$3,500.00

154 cm x 90 cm

Dora Mbitjana, an Anmatyerre woman born in 1965, hails from Ahalpere country in the remote Utopia region northeast of Alice Springs, a hub for Indigenous art since the late 1970s. Growing up amid the vast deserts and cultural traditions of her people, Dora was immersed in the stories and ceremonies that define Anmatyerre life. As the youngest of seven children to the late Minnie Pwerle—a pioneering artist whose bold, colourful works are held in major collections worldwide—and Motorcar Jim, she inherited a profound artistic lineage. This family connection extends to her sisters, including the internationally recognised Barbara Weir, known for her grass seed and wildflower paintings, and Betty Mbitjana, who also explores Dreaming narratives. Aunts Galya Pwerle and Emily Pwerle, along with cousins like Lizzie Morton and Jessie Hunter, further weave a tapestry of creative influence, emphasising the intergenerational sharing of knowledge in Aboriginal communities. Damien Yilpi Marks Australian Aboriginal art Painting
$5,500.00

Title: My Country

Size: 158cm x 92cm

In the vast expanse of Australia’s Central Desert, husband-and-wife artists Damien Marks and Yilpi Marks collaborate on radiant paintings that honour their ancestral Country. Damien, born and raised in Papunya, drew early inspiration from revered elders Clifford Possum, Billy Stockman, and Uta Uta Jangala. As a boy at Papunya School, he observed these mentors laying the groundwork for the Desert art movement, absorbing their techniques of depicting ceremonial regalia and artefacts. Damien preserves Clifford Possum’s heritage, infusing his work with symbolic depth that echoes ancient rituals.

Yilpi, from Ernabella, was shaped by her artist parents, who instilled in her a love for vibrant colours and expressive forms. After moving to Papunya, she blended Ernabella’s bold palettes with Papunya’s intricate storytelling, creating a unified style that celebrates both traditions.

Together, their canvases unfold as vivid maps of the landscape—swirling hills, rugged outcrops, and meandering waterways—layered with ceremonial elements, bush foods like seeds and fruits, and resilient desert vegetation. These works burst with life, weaving cultural narratives that highlight the desert’s spiritual significance to its custodians.

Through their partnership, Damien and Yilpi channel familial and elder influences into timeless expressions, fostering a deeper reverence for Indigenous connections to land and legacy.

Bob Gibson
Biography

Bob Gibson Tjungarrayi was born at Papunya in 1974, before moving with his family to Tjukurla during the Papunya Tula
movement of the 1980s, where many Ngaanyatjarra people moved to be closer to their ancestral homelands. Bob’s mother
Mary Gibson, also a leading Tjarlirli artist, is from the country of Kulkurta, his father’s country was near Patjarr.
Bob paints using bold colours and an abstract freedom, expressing ancient stories with a contemporary style. Bob is a vibrant character who is well loved within his community and offers support to many family members.
Looking at a Bob Gibson painting feels a little like spending time with the artist himself. Bob’s bold, playful presence in the studio is contagious; each canvas brings wild shapes and expressive line met with decisive mark-making and confident realisation of country. His highly unique representations of tjukurpa are an intersection of traditional storytelling and a spirited contemporary artistic practice.
