🤩 The Two Brightest Planets Are Racing Together

Step outside after sunset this week and look west. Venus and Jupiter are drawing closer every night, with tiny Mercury glowing low nearby.

These are the two brightest planets in the sky, and right now they’re putting on one of the easiest and most beautiful sky shows for beginners to catch.

What to look for:
Venus : the brightest object, blazing in the twilight
Jupiter : bright and close to Venus
Mercury : much lower, near the horizon, and a bit trickier to spot

😲You’re watching the brightest planets appear to move closer together night by night, a rare kind of sky drama you can actually notice with your own eyes. Of course this is just our perspective and these planets are separated by 10s to 100s of millions of miles from each other.

✅ Look 45–60 minutes after sunset
✅ Face west
✅ Find a spot with a clear, low horizon
✅ Check again each evening and watch the change

Sarah Reeves began her career in astronomy, completing a PhD at the University of Sydney focused on how galaxies evolve. Alongside her research, she developed a passion for science communication through public engagement roles at Sydney Observatory.

She later joined the Powerhouse Museum, where she helped deliver major space exhibitions including Apollo 11 and Task Eternal. Her work focused on showcasing Australia’s growing role in the global space sector and making space more accessible to audiences.

Today, Sarah works as the Space Sector Engagement Lead at the Bureau of Meteorology, supporting Australia’s expanding spaceflight industry through weather and space weather services that help enable safe launches and operations.

Following yesterday's announcement that the French Government has signed an agreement with Vast to send two French ESA - European Space Agency astronauts to space stations next year, the UK Space Agency today, June 2nd, announced it is also partnering with Vast.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed could see ESA reserve astronaut John McFall launch to Vast's Haven-1 space station as early as 2027. A former Paralympian, John McFall could become the first person with a physical disability to live and work in orbit.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will see the UK Space Agency support Vast to secure sponsorships to fund the spaceflight.
