A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along and supported the Railway Museum's Raise the Roof event. Yes, it was windy at times and rainy too but this just showed what a difference a roof can make.

Whether you attended the event, enjoyed a Devonshire tea, purchased memorabilia, made a donation, did a behind-the-scenes tour or simply helped spread the word, your support was greatly appreciated. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community come together to support the Museum and its future.

Thanks to your generosity and enthusiasm, we have made a fantastic start to our Raise the Roof Campaign. Every contribution, big or small, helps us move closer to preserving and protecting important pieces of our railway heritage.

Thank you for being part of such a successful day and we hope you got home and found your place safe. We look forward to sharing our progress with you and welcoming you back to the Museum again soon. Thanks to Colin Feilen and James Waterhouse for the photos.

Will we see you at our Raise the Roof event this Sunday?

In the beginning, the Railway Museum in Bassendean was an isolated undeveloped triangle of land donated by CSBP & Farmers Ltd. There was nothing but pine trees on the land and our volunteers had to start from scratch to create what we have today. The first structures built on the site were a platform, toilet block and entry kiosk, followed by the Exhibition Building in 1979.

Then in 1991 the construction of roof cover commenced, with the first stage funded by a 15 year lease of DD 596 to the owners of Gosnells Railway Markets. This section was extended eastwards by donations from our members. Stage 2 and 3 followed, where we faced a challenge due to the odd shape of the block.

Fortunately, we have been able to acquire more land as our collection expanded beyond the original goal in the 1960s of preserving steam era items. Our volunteers continue to work hard to care for the collection and now it is time for the next stage.

We need more roof cover and a restoration area to pass on the unique and disappearing skills. Now we need you, both individuals and businesses, to assist us preserve WA's railway history. We don't just do it for ourselves but for the community.

Join us for a special open day this Sunday at the Railway Museum as we begin our “Raise the Roof” campaign, a vital project to help protect and preserve our irreplaceable collection of Western Australia’s rail heritage.

Explore the museum at your own pace, with regular general admission available, or upgrade your visit with our Devonshire tea option. Make sure you visit our memorabilia stall. Children's activities and a sausage sizzle are provided too.

Every ticket, every donation, and every visit contributes to safeguarding this collection for future generations. Thank you!

What a difference roof cover can make to our collection. Our incredible 1885-built carriage, AG 14, is the oldest bogie carriage remaining in WA. It had been a workman's van when it was acquired by the Railway Museum and didn't fare too well in the weather. However in 2002, having the use of the car and wagon shop in the former WAGR Workshops in Midland, we transferred it to Midland where our volunteers undertook what was the biggest carriage restoration work in preservation in WA.

After restoration it was returned to Bassendean in 2006 and has spent the last 20 years there undercover and still looks great. It is enjoyed by so many of our visitors and is a significant part of WA's railway history.

We want to have even more of our collection protected from the weather and a workshop where restoration can be undertaken and skills can be shared. This is why our campaign to 'Raise the Roof' is so important and is the feature of Sunday's special Open Day. Please come along and support us on Sunday.

You can book entry tickets or entry tickets with Devonshire tea included at https://www.trybooking.com/DLXOT (Note: The 11:30am Devonshire teas have sold out)
