😀👏💙A small taste of life at Perth Modern School in 2007 from our archives.

It is hard to believe that it will be 20 years since the Class of 2007 graduated. We wonder if anyone is thinking about organizing a reunion for the 2007 or another year group?

If you are, volunteers at the Museum and Society can assist. Year groups who create a reunion event which starts at Mod usually have a display created by Museum & History Centre volunteers focussed on their years at Mod. For more information see: https://www.perthmoderniansociety.org.au/index.php/society/reunions/

Lest We Forget

Brian Jones's story was included in the Perth Modernian Society Newsletter from May 2019 - shared to this FBook page on 4/7/23. Refer also https://honour.perthmodern.wa.edu.au/ A picture of the Honour Board which honours Brian hangs in Beasley Building at Perth Modern School and is included in the comments.
Our volunteer, Bob Johnson, went to school with Brian and remembers him as a "big lad with a cheery grin and a happy demeanour."

Can You Help?

Some of you will be aware that from 1911 school cadets were compulsory under the Commonwealth Defence Act. Cadets were part of school life at PMS from 1911 to 1975. The Sphinx magazine covering the years of 1974-75 stated, “As 1975 ends, so will a heritage of 64 years of cadet activity at Perth Modern. Sixty-four years that bridged two world wars and many crises.” The Federal Labor Government disbanded school cadets at the end of 1975.

Today some Mod students are active in the Cadets WA program. More than 9,100 young people participate in over 180 cadet units throughout the State and involve around 1,100 volunteer instructors. Refer https://www.wa.gov.au/organisation/department-of-communities/cadets-wa

There was a PMS rifle range near the corner of Hamilton Road and Subiaco Road. Cadets fired small .22 calibre rifles and it was common for boys to carry their rifles to and from school on public transport. During World War 2, air-raid trenches were located near the original weatherboard gymnasium at the corner of Hamilton and Roberts Road.

We are seeking any photos and/or information you may have on the rifle range or trenches or other pictures that may reflect on the war years and school cadets at PMS. To date we have been unsuccessful in finding a picture of the rifle range at Mod. These will be accessioned into our archives and may become part of the digitally accessible Heritage Trail Project we are currently working on.

Please find photos of girls in the trenches at Mod and PMS cadets and some extracts from Sphinx Magazines and Trove from 1912 to the 1970s.

❤️✅😀We have been exploring photos and material we have in our archives as part of creating the new Heritage Trail. Some of these photos will be included in the 50 or so heritage and key sites on the trail. Students, visitors and interested members of the community will soon be able to explore these in person or online.

We are thankful for the many pics that have been donated by Modernians. 👏👏 Do you have any photos from your school sport days or other school days pics to add to our collection? If so, please visit the Museum and History Centre on Monday mornings (9.30 to midday) during school term or email a high-resolution copy. During school hours donations can also be dropped into the main school reception – please make sure they are clearly marked for the Museum and that you also include as much detail as possible plus your name and contact details.

This is one early example, we thought you may enjoy. 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️Sports Day 1916 or 1917 (ref. 76). If you look closely, it appears that the high jump is in progress. The boys are in knickerbockers & stockings. Shorts were apparently uncommon. A portion of the original gymnasium is in the top right-hand corner. That building was demolished in the 1950’s to make way for the new gymnasium (now the old gym) which opened in the early 1960s.

As per Trove - The West Australian Thursday 8 February 1912. “…….On the east side of the block there now stand a fine gymnasium and workshop, both of which buildings have been equipped with all the latest appliances for the training of the body, the hand, and the eye. Not far from these buildings, too, is a roomy play-shed, while between that and the magnificent pile of buildings which form the school itself is laid down a parade ground for, the cadets of the institution. In every way, therefore, the Modern School is developing into an asset of which any State might be proud……”

😀✈️💙In February we were very pleased to welcome Norm Chosid (student 1949-1953).

Norm reflected on his life at Mod in an interview with Sharon featured in the Museum Matters section of the Perth Modernian Society newsletter (February edition) out this week.

We thank Norm for his time, stories and for the many items he donated to the Museum. From all at the Museum we also wish Norm a very happy 90th birthday. 🥳🎉

If you have your story to share or any donations, the Museum is open on Monday mornings during school terms. Alternatively, our Biographical Form is available online for Modernians to share information about their lives and years at Mod. https://www.perthmoderniansociety.org.au/index.php/museum/

House/Faction System

In 1915 Joseph Parsons (Mod’s second Principal) divided the school into Red, Blue, Gold and Sphinx ‘Factions’ to promote sporting rivalry. This continued until 1973.

From the Sphinx Yearbook 72-73. "During 1973, Perth Modern School saw the transition from the traditional faction system to a house system.

The faction system was introduced into the school in the year 1915. Every year since, the four factions (Red, Blue, Gold, Sphinx) have competed for the faction shield. Over later years the competition was conducted in only two areas, swimming and athletics.

It was desired to extend the sporting activities to other areas and to include academic honours as well. The staff and students chose to change to a house system consisting of six houses (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Sigma, Omega) and the activities for competition to include both sporting and academic honours" (refer page 13).

The house clock (see pictures) was made by Mr John Wellman, Manual Arts Teacher, 1953-1974. The clock includes winning houses from 1973 to 1984. The winning house for 1973 was Gamma. As per the clock, in 1980 the house system reverted to colours (Red, Blue, Gold, Green) with red house winning. This clock can be viewed in the Museum.

In 1994 new names were given to factions. The Sphinx from 1994 states, “This year saw a new change to the faction system with names being given to each of the factions. In the past only colour names were associated with the factions. Each new name follows the Greek tradition, keeping in line with the school emblem - the Greek Sphinx.

Blue faction became APOLLO, after the Greek God of music; Gold faction was named OLYMPIA, after the home of the Olympic Games; Green faction retained the traditional name - SPHINX; and Red faction was renamed ATHENA after the Greek Goddess of wisdom.

At the end of term three, the competition for the John Wellman Faction Trophy is very close. With a number of activities still to be included in term four, the competition will be very close right to the end. This trophy is presented to the winning faction captains at the year twelve graduation, and again at the first school assembly of the next year.” Athena won in 1994.

In 2007, with the return of academic selected students, houses were named after the school's first four principals: Fredrick Brown (Blue), Joseph Parsons (Green), Noel Sampson (Red) and Talbot Downing (yellow/gold).

If you have any photos to share from a sports day or faction/house event, please share in the comments or via messenger or bring a copy into the Museum on Monday mornings (9.30am to midday - during school term).
