On Saturday 12th September 2026, artist Susan Wirth and Gallery Coordinator Katy Mitchell were in conversation to celebrate the opening of Susan’s exhibition 'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking'.

'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking' is a series of textile collages by Susan Wirth, developed through periods of research in and around Ararat and the Wimmera Mallee. The project examines how visitor status, site specificity, and settler heritage intersect in a contemporary textile practice. Using found textiles and second hand woollen blankets - materials tied to industrial manufacturing and histories of colonisation - Wirth constructs geometric, rhythmical compositions that operate as scaffolds for formal and conceptual exploration.

'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking' continues until Sunday 14th February 2027.

During the two hour life drawing class, artist Bev Isaac will guide you through timed warm-up and extended exercises and techniques to capture the human form. Easels, drawing boards, butchers paper and charcoal, chairs, and tables are all provided.

Oftentimes artists work alone in their studios. Having an artwork acquired by Ararat TAMA means that the work is in its forever home, it's cared for appropriately, contextualised within exhibitions, and most importantly: is in dialogue with gallery visitors, and with other works in the collection.

I am so proud to have an artwork in the TAMA Collection. I currently live in the Netherlands, but a part of my heart lives forever on a shelf in the storeroom of the Gallery.” – Hannah Gartside

What does it mean to an artist when their artwork is purchased for the TAMA Collection?

“Having my work acquired by Ararat Gallery TAMA has been such a meaningful milestone in my art career. For my work to join this incredible textile collection has been an honour.

Knowing that the Gallery sees value in my work and is investing in me as an artist has been a real confidence boost, helping me to continue making works and building a sustainable practice.

Regional galleries play an incredibly important role in bringing cultural activities to the area, with their collections ensuring valuable and ongoing accessibility to artworks for audiences. I would encourage anyone considering donating to an acquisitions fund to see it as an investment in artists, cultural heritage and the stories of our regions.”

Tonight is the Grampians W**e Festival Launch! Join Grampians w**e makers as they bring their cellar doors to the Ararat Town Hall, launching a month-long series of events 🍷

The Gallery will stay open after hours this evening in conjunction with the Festival Launch - you're welcome to wander (responsibily 😉) through our exhibitions with your glass of w**e.

We'll also have hands-on art-making activities for families in the Gallery foyer 🧶

Analog Art Club is a statewide initiative that invites Victorians to slow down, switch off their screens and connect in real life - through art. We have increased our AusArt Day fundraising target to $7000, with the campaign continuing through to 22nd October!

Funds raised through Grow the TAMA Collection will enable the Gallery to purchase new artworks by living artists and ensure the TAMA Collection remains dynamic, inclusive, and reflective of contemporary practice.

Buying artwork plays a crucial role in supporting artists, particularly those working in textile and fibre practices, which have historically been undervalued. By collecting and preserving work by contemporary artists TAMA affirms the value of their contributions and supports their ongoing careers.

Friday 2nd October: 10.30am – 12:30pm

We warmly invite families to venture into Ararat Gallery TAMA’s Studio for some creative fun! We will have various art-making activities set-up to explore – children will have the opportunity to get hands-on with textiles, beading, painting, printing, and drawing.

These are friendly drop in sessions – come in for as little or long as you like.

→ Suitable for children and young adults, ages 3 – 16
→ Free entry
→ All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times
