The Gallery is open daily 10am to 5pm (closed 25 December).

Founded in 1881, the Art Gallery of South Australia is home to one of Australia's great art collections, housed in one of Adelaide's most beautiful buildings. Located at the heart of Adelaide's cultural boulevard, North Terrace, between the South Australian Museum and University of Adelaide. Admission
General admission to the Gallery is free. Charges apply for some exhibitions. Parking
Parking is available opposite the Gallery in the Wilsonโ€™s Carpark on North Terrace. Restaurant & Shop

Building on ten years of extraordinary artistic and cultural achievement, we are excited to unveil the next chapter of the acclaimed Tarnanthi Festival, announcing Noongar curator and artist Zali Morgan as Artistic Director.

Todayโ€™s appointment coincides with the announcement of major new partnerships with the South Australian Government and BHP. The South Australian Government will be recognised as Principal Partner of the Tarnanthi Festival through a $4 million investment over four years.

The first program highlights for the 2027 Tarnanthi Festival have also been revealed, including the major survey exhibition Yunupiล‹u: Seven Sisters, developed in collaboration with Buku-Larrล‹gay Mulka Centre and the Yunupiล‹u family; and, Melting Point: Wati Wai!, an ambitious project developed by Mimili Maku Arts and initiated by Yankunytjatjara artist and cultural leader Robert Fielding and the Mimili Maku Wati Studio.

Sir Hans Heysen OBE was born on this day 149 years ago, 8 October 1877, in Hamburg, Germany.

One of South Australia's greatest artists, Heysen is remembered for his celebration of gum trees as giants of the bush. Through his paintings, Australians came to see them as he did.

Two works on display at the Art Gallery of Australia show Heysenโ€™s mastery as a landscape painter, and each captures something of his growing status as an artist through the size of the trees he painted.

Mystic Morn, painted in 1904 when Heysen was still an emerging artist, depicts young saplings among which cattle are wandering. It won him the Wynne Prize for landscape painting that year โ€“ the first of nine times he would claim the prestigious prize.

Nearby, Red Gold, painted in 1913 after Heysen had established his reputation as an artist, features two monumental gums towering over a track at Hahndorf, where Heysen had recently moved to live and work.

As part of Adelaide Design Week, join us for a special Tuesday Talk with iconic South Australian furniture designer and maker, Jon Goulder, in conversation with Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, Rebecca Evans.

Goulder is both a designer and a talented furniture maker - a rarity in the Australian and international design community. His 'Broached Goulder chaise lounge' (2019-20), made in collaboration with textile artist Liz Williamson, is a beloved part of AGSA's collection.
