It’s the final week to see „Silent Choir”, Valentine Noujaïm’s solo show curated by Odessa Warren.

“Seven trumpets fill the room, recalling the seven angels of the apocalypse. Each is fitted with a mute, forming Noujaïm’s silent choir. The hum of white noise is heard in the space, like the dead sound of a feed cut mid-transmission, underscoring the trumpets’ muteness. Their surfaces are engraved with a range of motifs, among them drawings made by the artist’s brother as a child during the war in Lebanon. A television recalls the domestic sets of the early 2000s, a nod to his own association with light and sound, formed through early memories of the announcements of catastrophe.
For Noujaïm, St John’s retreat from the world signalled a way for him to make sense of its evils. In the darkness, in his solitude, everything was revealed to him. The artist sets this story against a present moment marked by permanent noise and hyper-exposure, three years into a livestreamed genocide met with impunity. In Greek, ἀποκάλυψις (apokálypsis) carries a double meaning- apocalypse and revelation. In a world where sound and image have failed, the artist asks what may be revealed to us in the dark quiet.
The exhibition carries forward Noujaïm’s interest in myth and storytelling as a means of thinking through the present, turning here to the Christian apocalyptic imagination. He approaches St John not as a religious icon, but as a figure who, at a time of persecution and defeat, retreated from the world, and was granted a vision of its unmaking and renewal. The work also extends the artist’s reflection on evil, as a concept reached for to explain destruction and violence that is otherwise inexplicable. In the Book of Revelation, each trumpet, sounded in turn, announces a different part of the apocalypse. The muteness of the seven trumpets in Noujaïm’s Silent Choir is undetermined- whether because they have already sounded, or because their silence keeps a further catastrophe at bay.”

The show is on until 17 October.

Marina Faust’s solo exhibition „VON BIS / FROM TO“ is still on view at Phileas until 26 September. If you are in Vienna for Curated By, do not miss Marina Faust’s show.
The exhibition focuses on Faust’s shoe series, which has never been shown in an institutional context before. In this body of work from the early 2000s, shoes appear not as everyday or fashion objects but as complex architectural structures. Over the course of many years, Faust collected different types of shoe ranging from fashion design to fe**sh footwear to then deconstruct them and alter their forms.
Faust explores objects in relation to function and its absence. Through subtle interventions and shifts in context, familiar items relinquish their original purpose and assume a new presence as autonomous sculptural forms.
The exhibition is a collaboration with Frac-Artothèque Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Limoges, and a preview of her forthcoming solo exhibition Sans contrefaçon, anatomie d’un vêtement, co-produced by Phileas, opening there this autumn.

It’s the final days to see “Estonian Realities” at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, an exhibition devoted to three Estonian artists whose work spans from the mid-twentieth century to this day: Olga Terri (1916-2011), Anu Põder (1947- 2013), and Kris Lemsalu (born in 1985).

Anu Põder has been a major art historical rediscovery in recent years. The exhibition features about fifteen works revealing the singular world of this artist whose practice developed outside the rigid academic framework of her era. The materials used by Anu Põder—burlap, plastic, soap, aluminum—convey the precariousness of her condition under Soviet rule, while revealing the upheavals in Estonian society at the moment of the country’s regained independence. The artist’s body is often implicitly present in her vulnerable, fragile sculptures that defy the boundaries of traditional figurative conventions.

The exhibition is closing on 19 July.

It’s the last day to see “Your Ambivalence” at Kunstraum Riehen with works by Leda Bourgogne.

Throughout the history of psychology, ambivalence has been described as a state in which conflicting emotions are experienced. In its extreme form, it can lead to inner conflicts. Although originally viewed negatively, ambivalence in art and literature can create a productive tension that sheds light on hidden power dynamics and introduces new structures. Thus, since the 20th century, ambivalence has no longer been regarded as a pathological symptom but is understood as part of subjective experience that can lead to more nuanced thinking.
(…)
In Your Ambivalence, the artworks highlight the contradictory nature of perception. They trace a fluctuation between different interpretations and desires. The body becomes a fluid entity: its forms and gestures serve as means of communication between protection and freedom, while gender attributions are subverted. The pleasure in ambivalent images and sculptures is celebrated here to create a space for reflection that encompasses each viewer’s own perception of the world. Curated by Simone Neuenschwander.

Leda Bourgogne and Marina Faust are part of “Stellprobe. Collection Acquisitions from the Last Decade in a Display by Heimo Zobernig” which is opening tonight at Belvedere 21.

More than 150 artworks are being brought together at Belvedere 21 in the spirit of a Stellprobe—an experimental, intuitive arrangement that reveals new relationships between the works. The exhibition title stems from a suggestion by Heimo Zobernig and borrows a term from theater, where it refers to an intermediate stage in the development of a production. Occupying the ground floor, upper floor, Blickle Cinema, and sculpture garden, this large-scale exhibition is dedicated to acquisitions and donations of the past ten years. It functions as a review, an insight into the collection strategy, and a temporary vision of a possible future museum. Here, the museum presents itself not only as a place of preservation but also as a place of contemporaneity, where art is produced and art history is constantly being written.
