Our current exhibition by PHILIPP FÜRHOFER on film.

In his first solo exhibition in Austria, PHILIPP FÜRHOFER (Augsburg, 1982) presents paintings as well as light boxes that
he calls machines of illusion. Painting on both the front and reverse sides of glass panels, the artist unfurls natural
sceneries that defy unambiguous interpretation. Through a complex painting process in which layers are applied,
exposed, and then covered up again, motifs representing idealized visions of nature come to overlap with elements of
civilization. FÜRHOFER incorporates logos, catchphrases, and fragmentary imagery into his romantic-looking depictions
of nature to raise questions about the relationship between humans, nature, and the environment. The same tension
extends into his light boxes, which are both paintings and light installations. Depending on the status of the illuminants,
which alternates rhythmically, the pictorial layers within become visible or reflect their surroundings, including the
viewers.

PHILIPP FÜRHOFER lives and works in Berlin. He ranks among the most sought-after set designers of his generation, having worked for the Royal Opera House, London, the Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam, and the Salzburg Easter Festival, among others. In spring 2027, he will design the set for Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at La Scala in Milan. His visual art is held in numerous museum and gallery collections worldwide. He has had solo exhibitions at the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (2023), and the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2017/18), among others, and his work has featured in group and solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Milan, Munich, Paris, Sydney, and Wolfsburg.

ANDREAS BEITIN studied art history, applied cultural studies, and modern and contemporary history. Following his doctorate in 2004, he worked at the ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst in Karlsruhe, holding various academic and curatorial positions before taking over as director of the museum in 2010. Since then he has conceived numerous internationally recognized exhibitions as curator or co-curator. He has published scholarly texts at home and abroad, given lectures, and edited numerous publications. Beitin has served for many years on various art juries and academic committees, and has received several awards for his curatorial work. From February 2016 to March 2019 he was director of the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen; since April 2019 he has been director of Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg.

Both in the light boxes and in the paintings on acrylic glass, the paint undergoes a process of formal dissolution. The individual layers erode, revealing motifs that vanish again in the next step. What comes into view owes its existence to this subtractive process — to the exposure of what lies beneath.
This logic of revealing and concealing draws on a long tradition of theater and set design. A key reference is the picture-frame stage that took hold in the Baroque era, in which the stage is organized as a self-contained deep space, the audience’s gaze falling into it as if through a window. Fürhofer’s light boxes are exactly such framed spaces: containers that grant visibility to their interiors only under certain conditions. Like the raising of a theater curtain, the light unlocks spaces that are at once scenes of a performative staging.
 On display till August 31.

We are pleased to present Philipp Fürhofer’s first solo exhibition at the gallery – and his first in Austria.   On view to the public from July 17.
Join us for a reception for the artist and a conversation with Andreas Beitin, Director of Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, on Saturday, August 1, at 11:30 AM.

We are delighted to announce our summer exhibition: the first solo show of Philipp Fürhofer both in Austria and at the gallery.

Fürhofer’s work occupies a space between painting, sculpture, and theatrical staging. His luminous installations transform the conditions of viewing itself, turning light, glass, and surface into a sustained meditation on presence and perception.

KENTON NELSON. Ten Watercolors for Salzburg

Opening: 7 May, 6pm

As the exhibition’s title indicates, KENTON NELSON presents ten new watercolors that extend the universe of his stylized imagery and enrich it with new motifs. The pictures render idyllic impressions from his Californian surroundings and captivate the viewer with the delicate, luminous quality that is distinctive to watercolor painting.
