Johann Booyens in Quiet Topographies

Johann Booyens is drawn to the threshold: The narrow overlap where two opposing ideas are held in the mind at once, without either being resolved away. The oldest of these, he suggests, runs between nature and the built environment - the one organic, fluid and integrated, the other static, framed and geometrically intrusive. It is usually described as a tension, though he treats it as a double desire: with the one we fall into softness, with the other we make sense. Neither cancels the other, and both, in his account, are equally valid and equally necessary.

White River Gallery will show at the nineteenth edition of FNB Art Joburg (FNB Art Joburg), the oldest contemporary art fair on the continent, with three of the artists we represent. It is a considerable honour. Working with Bianca Black, Michael Selekane and Ingrid Uys has been a privilege, and watching each body of work find its own direction - some over years, some more recently - has been the better part of it. What I look forward to most is the size of the room, and the chance to stand back while the work speaks for itself. — Dana

Majak Bredell | INTERCONNECTIONS

White River Gallery, The Art House in Hoedspruit

The White River Gallery is currently exhibiting local artist Majak Bredell’s work at The Art House, Hoedspruit. The exhibition, INTERCONNECTIONS, comprises of large works on paper and smaller gouache paintings.

The gouache paintings were started during the 2020 lockdown. These works were inspired by the illuminations of an 8th century Spanish monk, Beatus of Liébana’s commentary on the Apocalypse of John. Majak was particularly inspired by Beatus’ use of horizontal coloured bands that divided the page in different zones on which his subject matter was then dramatically staged. By dividing her own pages into these horizontal bands, perspective, scale, and form fell away to set the stage for a different iconography - levels and layers of interconnectedness between the physical realm and the metaphysical realm between both these and the natural world that is home. The colour bands denote the above and below, and the in-between, while it also hints at the levels of consciousness and encounters with self that arose during the pandemic lockdown.

Majak’s gouache paintings pay tribute to the earth and the animals and to that wild part at home in the human spirit. Scroll here for two examples of these paintings currently on show and available as part of INTERCONNECTIONS.

The exhibition catalogue, INTERCONNECTIONS, and both Majak Bredell’s books, “Sacred Scars” and “Pilgrimage to Myself: A Journey To Wholeness Through Artmaking,” are available in the gallery.

Congratulations to Mellaney Roberts (far right in the photo) on the Outstanding Visual Artist award at Friday night’s National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA), and to Berman Contemporary, who show her work.

Mellaney works in ceramics, on identity, memory and belonging/otherness - subjects we have been drawn further into as a gallery, and we remain excited about the growth of ceramics and the artists working in the medium.

It is no small thing that two of our represented artists, Gwenneth Miller and Michael Selekane, were shortlisted alongside Mellaney. This photograph from the awards is a joy to see - three artists from three different parts of the country, working in three different ways, and between them asking questions about identity and place that are uniquely ours. We cannot wait to see where each of them goes next, and we would urge you to keep an eye on all three.

Many of you will recognise Gwenneth Miller and Michael Selekane, represented by the gallery - and we’re incredibly proud to share that both have been nominated for the National Arts and Culture Award (NACA) 2026 for Outstanding Visual Artist.  That two of the three nominees are represented by White River Gallery is the highest honour. We could not be prouder of either of them.

Gwenneth is nominated for Omgekeerd, a body of work that began taking shape as she came home after a long stretch away. Michael’s practice has circled migration for years - what you carry with you, and how you remember where you’re from.

Congratulations to Gwenneth, to Michael, and to Mellaney Roberts (Waar Bloed Nie Loop Nie) - all three nominees.  The winner will be announced as follows:

Hoedspruit | ARTIST WALKABOUT | Sunday 9 August, 11am
 Anyone who has been on a walkabout with South African artist Majak Bredell will know the remarkable intellectual landscape she traverses - from art history and archaeology to mythology, ancient cultures and her own experience of growing up in conservative, rural South Africa. Through all of it runs the feminine, traced back well past the point where most art histories begin. 
Join us on Women’s Day, Sunday 9 August, at 11am at The Art House in Hoedspruit as Bredell talks us through the ideas, images and questions that shaped her current exhibition, INTERCONNECTIONS.

While Odette Saayman’s majestic landscape painting draws us into this exhibition, there are quieter moments that stand out. 𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴 is one of them. A dusty path, a bucket of water, a chance to soak up the last of the afternoon sun. Shadows across a corrugated roof and the reassuring permanence of a gum tree. 
‘Waar die Kranse Antwoord Gee’ is on show now at White River Gallery, Casterbridge, filled with moments that will echo back at you. Join us this Sunday 2 August at 11am for a curators walkabout with Dana MacFarlane. We’re pleased to share that the artist will be present from from 10am to 1pm.
