The fishing industry offers a wide variety of employment opportunities, and today we would like to highlight the important role of net menders. The ladies featured in this photograph have dedicated many years to this profession. Through their experience and commitment, they have become highly skilled in their work and continue to take great pride in what they do.
As a museum committed to preserving and sharing the history of our town, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the valuable contribution these women have made to the local fishing industry.
On the day this photograph was taken, the ladies had just begun repairing a large fishing net used for catching pelagic species. Since they had travelled from Saldanha, they spent approximately a week completing the repairs. The work took less time than usual because the net only required minor repairs rather than being made from scratch. Constructing a completely new net can take between two to three weeks to complete.
It was also an especially sunny week, which is why they chose to work outside wearing their hats for protection from the sun. They were warm, friendly, and hardworking women whose dedication reflects the spirit of the fishing community.
