Connection to Velddrif

The story of the De Gouden Buys is closely linked to Velddrif and St Helena Bay. It is regarded as one of the earliest recorded maritime disasters on this stretch of the West Coast and forms an important part of the area's maritime heritage. The wreck is believed to lie somewhere along the coast near the mouth of the Berg River, although its exact location has never been confirmed.

This story is especially significant for the SA Fisheries Museum because it highlights the rich maritime history of the West Coast and the long relationship between the sea and the people who have lived here for centuries.
